Opportunities from the Graduate School

The Graduate School is now accepting applications for the 2014 Graduate Student Summer Teaching Institute. The Institute is designed for students who have limited training in teaching college courses and who have (or will have) instructional responsibilities at NC State. By the end of the Institute, participants will be able to teach their first course. More details:

Dates: June 9 – 12, 2014 (Participants must be able to attend every day for the entire time.)
Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm (Lunch and snacks will be provided each day.)
Location: NC State, Main Campus (Specific location details will be sent to accepted applicants.)
Application information: Interested graduate students must apply to the Graduate Student Summer Teaching Institute. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, May 7, at 5:00PM. Accepted participants will be notified May 9.

Graduate Writing Center

The Graduate Writing Center (GWC) opened on September 3rd. Graduate writing consultants are available to work on any piece of non-exam related writing from course-work to job materials. Consultants from a variety of disciplines are trained to provide audience-based feedback in order to help writer's make sure their ideas are communicated clearly. Students can book appointments through the GWC website.  The Graduate Writing Center is located in the Undergraduate Tutorial Center at 101 Park Shops. Thesis and Dissertation Support Services

NEW!  Writing your thesis or dissertation is one of the most challenging tasks of your graduate career. We are here to help! We provide scholarly writing instruction and information on best practices for graduate students through seminars, writing workshops, dissertation institutes, and more.

Are you a new graduate student? Attend our “Forming an Advisory Committee” faculty panel and learn about this important step in the degree process.

Are you starting to think about your dissertation? Attend our “Dissertation 101” seminar and learn everything you need to know to be successful in writing one.

Are you ABD? Attend our workshop on “Writing Your Dissertation in 15 Minutes a Day!”

PhD Job Market Candidates / Mock Interviews

PhD candidates going on the academic job marke this year should let Dr. Morant know ASAP of those intentions.  If you are indeed going on the market, please send your relevant information to Valarie James so that you can be included on the Job Candidates webpage. Do not let this easy means of publicizing yourself go to waste. If you don't yet have a website with your job paper posted, your paper can be linked directly from our program website.

If you are scheduling mock interviews you MUST have your info included on the Job Candidates site. If you've already signed up for mock interviews but do not have your information posted yet, please send your information to Valarie as soon as possible. Faculty who sign up to conduct your interview will be referred to the Job Candidates site to review your information.
 

Graduate Student Presentation Workshop Series

The Graduate Program in Economics is extending the summer graduate student workship series through the academic year.  Information about the workshop series and how to register for a time-slot can be found here.  Graduate students who plan to go on the job market this year should register for presentations as soon as possible. This is an excellent opportunity to practice your presentation and get feedback from both faculty and fellow grad students.

As mentioned in the attachment, the presenting student is responsible for writing an announcement of the upcoming presentation. Please forward the announcement to Robin Carpenter and she will circulate it among graduate students and faculty.

List of Editors for Hire

The List of Editors for Hire is a list of faculty, staff, graduate students at NC State University, as well as several professionals, who have expressed interest in proofreading for a fee. The Graduate School does NOT supervise, manage, recommend, or approve these services; the list is simply provided as a courtesy. All arrangements are made between the student and the hired editor. Please remember that it is the student's responsibility to abide by the student code of conduct at all times. Be sure to inquire about their rates when contacting editors. 

Information for International Students Seeking Employment in the U.S.

On November 9, 2011, the Poole College of Management hosted a workshop for international students who are interested in finding employment in the U.S. post-graduation. The workshop was conducted by Mark Rhoads, an immigration attorney with McCandlish Holton, PC in Richmond, VA.  Mr. Rhoads' powerpoint presentation and handouts are available on the Job Market Resources page
