Accounting Students Honored

The awards were presented during the Department of Accounting’s annual fall banquet held September 16 at the Crabtree Valley Marriott in Raleigh, NC.

The students, along with their professors and staff, and members of the accounting profession, were also challenged by the evening’s keynote speaker to consider the impact that globalization is having on their profession.

“Accounting and auditing in the United States are at a crossroads,” said Bill Gradison, founding member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).

“There clearly is tension between developing, maintaining, and enforcing our own U.S. standards and the powerful move toward globalization … of standards elsewhere around the world,” he said.” Time will tell whether or not this tension will ultimately result in U.S. standards being replaced by international standards. But in the here and now multiple standards will coexist. This presents significant challenges for students, educators, auditors, issuers, investors (especially analysts), rating services and, of course, regulators.” Read the full text of Bill Gradison’s remarks on the PCAOB website.

Frank Buckless, head of the college’s Department of Accounting, said the college’s accounting professors are already incorporating discussions about the impact of globalization and international standards into their classrooms.“Our approach is to focus on helping our students develop the problem-solving skills that will enable them to work on the issue at hand, and to know how to apply the appropriate standards.”

During the evening’s awards program, 65 MAC students were recognized for receiving scholarships, fellowships, internships, and graduate assistantships. Eleven undergraduate students also were recognized for obtaining high-profile internships with accounting firms Deloitte; Dixon Hughes; Ernst & Young; KPMG; Thomas, Judy & Tucker; Williams Overman Pierce and XS, Inc.
