College of Management’s Fall Career and Internship Fair is Today

“We have strategically planned for the College of Management Career Fair to immediately follow the College of Engineering’s fair, which is being held on October 5 and October 6,” said Brenda McCarthy, director of career and internship development in the college’s Office of Undergraduate Programs. “This was done to provide a cost-effective opportunity for recruiters to meet with our students. By extending their stay in Raleigh by one day, they will be able to meet with our accounting, business administration and economics students.”

Students in the college’s Jenkins Graduate School of Management and other colleges and programs across campus at NC State are also welcome, as well as alumni seeking employment.

“Whether you plan to graduate this December, next May, or even a few years down the road, it’s never too early to prepare for the job search and start getting experience,” McCarthy said. “In the current challenging economy, students must begin to build their professional network as early as their freshman year,” she said. “If you are hoping to be employed within the next nine months, you should think of your job search as a full time job.”

Participating it the career and internship fair is an excellent opportunity to begin meeting recruiters and to learn about their companies and the jobs and internships that they offer. Those expecting to graduate in December or May 2010 should consider the career fair as an essential event that they don’t want to miss,” McCarthy said.

Attire for the career fair is business professional. Along with professional attire, students are encouraged to participate in one of the Undergraduate Programs Offices’ career development events, including the OUP’s Jumpstart Workshop series, to help them make the most of the career fair. Topics covered in the workshops include information about conducting successful interviews, and evaluating job offers.

All undergraduate career development events are available on the Undergraduate Programs Office website – click on the Career Resources link on the right. While these workshops are not mandatory, they can provide helpful information for the job search. Visit the workshops website to see which events interest you the most, and then register by contacting the Office of Undergraduate Programs at 919.515.5565.

“It is critical, in this tight job market, that students are strategic and well-prepared for every encounter with individuals who may connect them with a job opportunity. Anticipate strong competition, learn to be proactive and aggressive to make yourself attractive to potential employers. The College of Management Career Development Center offers workshops to develop tools and hone skills—your tuition pays for them, take advantage of them.”

McCarthy also said, “Networking and relevant work experience will be the pivotal keys to attaining a job offer upon graduation. Begin exploring and developing a strong professional network now. Summer summer internships can be part of building that network while also providing relevant work experience that is crucial to getting noticed and hired upon graduation.”

Students may log in via ePack on the College of Management Career & Internship Fair page in the University Career Center website to see the names of employers registered for the career fair.

This career fair is also open to the graduate students in the College of Management, alumni, and other NC State students.
