Final Week for Shack-a-Thon Fundraising

As of Saturday morning, Sept. 25, the College of Management’s team had raised over $1,500, said co-organizer Dan Schillaci. Its goal is between $2,000 and $2,500. In 2009, the college’s team, comprised of three student organizations, had raise a about $1,700. Contributions can still be made online at the NC State Habitat for Humanity website (click on the Donate button and enter College of Management for the name of the club on page two of the online form) or at the college’s Office for Undergraduate Programs, 2150 Nelson Hall.

This year’s team, including members from six College of Management student organization, sold college-branded merchandise and baked goods, and took donations at their shack and in Nelson Hall. They also offered a resume review to draw students to the shack. “We had a good number of students come for that,” Schillaci said, “but the most successful was the merchandise,” he said. The team sold gray College of Management-branded t-shirts with the slogan ‘We Mean Business,’ as well as koozies, sunglass holders (croakies) and bumper stickers.

Schillaci was at the Brickyard Saturday morning as part of the crew dismanteling shacks and helping Habitat for Humanity members gather up the construction materials. While taking a break, he shared some of what he learned from the experience.

“It’s definitely a learning experience,” he said. One thing he learned is that a project like this “takes a lot of communication. We had to make sure someone was always in the shack. He also discovered how stressful it can be to live in such an open setting. “Even though we had a great week, with no rain, and we had it better than a lot of others, it was still very stressful. You hear noises, the sun comes up early. We also learned a lot about other students (in the college),” he said. “I met new Hamilton Scholars and Alpha Kappa Psi members that I did not know before, had a chance to talk with them for an hour during my shifts (in the shack).”
