Innovation Research, Student Projects in Spotlight at Upcoming CIMS Meeting

The CIMS meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27 through Oct. 29, and includes presentations by students and recent graduates of the NC State College of Management’s Jenkins Graduate School of Management and a tour of MeadWestvaco’s Innovation Showcase on NC State’s Centennial Campus. Faculty presentations include:

  • Overview of Macrotrends and Issues Facing the Healthcare Industry
  • Synthesizing Art and Science: The Power and Importance of Both and Their Influence in Innovation and Business
  • Executive Education presentation provided in conjunction with CIMS’ Innovation Management School
  • Panel discussion of healthcare innovation challenges
  • Summaries of research in the area of services and services innovation, and
  • The Lab of the Future.

Synthesizing Art and Science: The Power and Importance of Both and Their Influence in Innovation and Business, is a special feature is a presentation and discussion by Dr. Bulent Atalay, professor of physics emeritus at the University of Mary Washington. This event will be held Wednesday, Oct. 28, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Poe Hall on the north side of the NC State main campus.

Atalay is a sought-after speaker and scholar who has won international recognition for his professional presentations as well as published books and articles. His most recent book is Leonardo’s Universe: The Renaissance World of Leonardo da Vinci (National Geographic Books, 2009), co-authored with former graduate student Keith Wamsley. It was listed among the Britannica Blog’s “Ten Must-Have Books for the Year.” An earlier book, Math and the Mona Lisa: The Art and Science of Leonardo da Vinci (Smithsonian Books, 2004), has been published in 12 languages. The work of student teams in the College of Management’s Jenkins Master of Global Innovation Management (MGIM) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs will be highlighted at the meeting as well. Two MGIM teams will present and discuss their spring 2009 practicum projects during the CIMS’ welcoming reception on Oct. 27. On Oct. 29, two MBA student teams will discuss their summer 2009 biosciences management practicum projects with MeadWestvaco and Novozymes North America.

CIMS meeting participants are encouraged to also attend the Fifth Annual Biosciences Forum, to be held Friday, Oct. 30, at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Research Triangle Park. There is no charge to attend this event but pre-registration is required.
