Jenkins MAC Program Announces Fellowship Recipients

The Jenkins Master of Accounting (MAC) Program in the NC State University Poole College of Management announced the recipients of 20 fellowships awarded this fall.

Five of the awards are sponsored by accounting firms Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, Ernst & Young, Johnson Lambert & Co.; fifteen are academic fellowships sponsored by the Jenkins MAC Program.

The fellows receive full tuition and a graduate assistantship.

In announcing the fellowship awards, Dr. Katherine Krawczyk, MAC Program director, spoke briefly about the program and qualities sought by accounting recruiters. “The best skills for an accountant don’t involve numbers, she said. Rather, it’s the ‘soft skills’ that are highly sought by recruiters.

“Everyone thinks it’s all about numbers. That is a big part of it, but “what you also need as an accounting professional is to be able to work in teams and present yourself well,” she said.

That is why communication, group work, and oral and written assignments are an important part of the 150-hour education requirement for the Jenkins MAC program. Equally important are the critical thinking and research skills emphasized through the MAC curriculum, which includes 25 accounting courses and six hours of courses from the Jenkins MBA course list.

Selection to the one-year, 31 hour program is based on merit, including a strong grade point average, a competitive GMAT score and evidence of leadership development. An undergraduate degree in accounting is not required for admission to the program; however, students without an undergraduate accounting degree would need to have a strong base in accounting and must complete the program’s seven prerequisite courses.

In addition to its comprehensive curriculum, the Jenkins MAC program team is committed to helping students with their job placement efforts, including multiple opportunities to meet with accounting firms through its Tour of Cities and other networking events. NC State Jenkins MAC program graduates often gain employment with the Big Four and second tier national accounting fefirms, corporations, education, government and nonprofit organizations, Krawczyk said.
