NC State Poole College’s Collegiate DECA Members Earn Regional Awards

A team of students from the Collegiate DECA organization based in the NC State University Poole College of Management brought home seven awards from the Collegiate DECA Regional Conference on February 20, 2012, at George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C.

The students had participated in multiple competitions that showcased their skills in various areas of business. Recognized were:

  • Billy Burnet, second place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing; third place, International Marketing.
  • Christian Dicosola, first place in Retail Management.
  • Brianne Bower Lamm, first place in both Marketing Management and Travel and Tourism Marketing.
  • Thomas Elmo Lamm, Jr.: first place in Business Ethics; third place, Corporate Finance.
  • Mandy Scott: first place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing; third place, Marketing Management.
  • Sarah Mazur: first place in both accounting and restaurant and food service management

Poole College supports student organizations’ involvement in competitions and conferences by assisting with some of the travel costs. The NC State Collegiate DECA organization had been awarded dean’s sponsorship to attend the 2011 International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, in April 2011 and again in 2012.

To show appreciation for the college’s support, the club entered the regional conference at GWU in the hopes of returning to NC State with a number of awards. Club members invited Associate Dean Shannon Davis to a surprise announcement of their awards at their March meeting in Poole College’s Nelson Hall.

“Our NC State Collegiate DECA chapter deserves recognition for its tremendous accomplishments in the four years since its founding,” Davis said. “The students founded the NC State chapter with the goal of providing a transition for our incoming freshmen who had been active in DECA at the high school level. Our collegiate DECA chapter serves as an ‘on ramp,’ enabling students to step directly into leadership and professional development opportunities here in Poole College.”

The NC State Collegiate DECA chapter was founded in 2008 by four students during their freshmen year: Burnet, Bower Lamm, Lamm, and Sarah Mazur. The chapter is sending 17 members to compete in the 2012 International Collegiate DECA Competition in Salt Lake City in April.
