Poole College’s Jenkins MBA Student Helping French SKEMA Cohort Connect at NC State

SKEMA, one of the most prestigious French business schools, has opened its U.S. branch on Centennial Campus. NC State’s Poole College of Management and the university’s Global Training Initiative (GTI) are partnering with SKEMA to welcome and orient the students to the university during their spring semester.

Among those participating in the SKEMA students’ opening orientation session were Ira Weiss, dean of the Poole College of Management, and Bob Flynn, graduate student in the college’s Jenkins MBA program.

Weiss spoke about the college’s commitment to offering meaningful international business education opportunities for its students and both student and faculty interaction with SKEMA.

Flynn spoke both as president of the college’s MBA Student Association and in his role as a GTI graduate assistant (GA). In his role as GA, Flynn serves at the SKEMA students’ liaison with the university. GTI offers certificate, study, research and internship programs that support international partnerships between NC State students and faculty, businesses in North Carolina, and the global community.

“I saw this as a very exciting opportunity to meet international business students as well as get more involved with NCSU,” Flynn said.

NCSU Volunteers Still Needed

One of his responsibilities is to recruit and coordinate International Cultural Leadership Volunteers from throughout the university to participate in small team activities with the SKEMA students.

The volunteers “will play a key fun and exciting role” in helping SKEMA students get connected and involved at NC State. The teams will work on a group project throughout the semester and participate in cultural, recreational, service and business activities. Participants will receive certificates and compete for awards and prizes that will be presented at a celebration in April.

“Because SKEMA students will take their own classes and live off campus, the NCSU volunteers will provide them with invaluable opportunities to interact with NC State students, improve their English conversation, and learn more about Raleigh and U.S. culture,” according to a fact sheet about the volunteering opportunity. The time commitment is about 10 to 15 hours for the period January to April 2011.

Volunteer Applications Due January 19

Volunteers will gain experience working on international and cross-cultural teams, develop leadership and business skills, network with some of Europe’s most talented business students and other NC state students, and make an impact on a Raleigh nonprofit through their service learning project. Student interested in participating may send an email message to Bob Flynn to request an application or clarification about the volunteer opportunity.

“The last day to volunteer is January 19, and the first event the volunteers need to participate in is on the 29th,” Flynn said. He will begin organizing the teams on January 20th, with three SKEMA students paired up with one or two NCSU students.

Also speaking at the SKEMA orientation were Kelly Hook, NC State student body president, and Michael Bustle, associate vice provost for international affairs at NC State.
