Poole Council Used Book Drive Set for May 2-12

Book collection boxes will be located in the vicinity of Poole College’s four department offices in Nelson Hall and the building’s Port City Java. The book collection is being organized by members of the Poole Council – the NC State Poole College of Management’s student governance body – in partnership with BetterWorldBooks.com.

The online bookstore gathers and resells books from campus book drives like the one being hosted by the Poole Council, as well as other sources, and sells them online.

Proceeds from BetterWorldBooks.com’s sales help fund high-impact literacy projects in the United States and around the world. Student organizations that help collect books for the online company also benefit financially.

“For every book we donate, we get money for our student organizations, along with being able to donate money to the charity organization that the council selected,” said Dr. K. Leigh Forell, the student advisor to the Poole Council student governance body.

The Poole Council has selected Worldfund, a program dedicated to minimizing the education gap and improving overall education in Latin America, to benefit from its book drive this spring, Forell said.

Encouraging students and faculty to donate news and used books in good condition helps keep usable books out of landfills.

“Considering the Poole Council is named after Lonnie Poole, who is very big on sustainability, we thought it would be a nice project to get started in his honor,” Forell said. “We also get to help our partners in developing countries. It is twofold: We are giving back and being green.”

“In some countries it is a privilege just to wake up each morning and have food and clean water,” said Jacob Fericy, who is involved through the Poole Council. “In these countries some students do not even have the opportunity to finish high school or grade school because of their family situation. When students donate their books they are essentially giving out opportunities to those who have opportunities that are quite limited.”
