Port City Java Coffeehouse Café located in Nelson Commons

The facility is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday during the fall semester.

The café is operated by University Dining, the food service operation of North Carolina State University. It is the fourth Port City Java Café on the NC State campus, joining locations in Carmichael Gymnasium, Engineering II and the College of Textiles on Centennial Campus.

We brought the Wilmington-based Port City Java onto our campus in 2006, and it has been a great relationship, said Randy Lait, associate director of University Dining. They have been a partner to us and their approach to providing all-day menu items such as excellent breakfast wraps, signature sandwiches and salads, fresh-baked goods baked onsite, premium juices, real fruit smoothies, and gourmet shakes, in addition to premium artisan prepared coffee products, has helped us to continue to broaden our offerings to students, staff and faculty.

Port City Java offers a variety of four brewed coffees everyday, one of which is its unique certified Fairganic® category. Some coffees are the product of fair-trade practices, but are not necessarily organic, and vice versa, said Denise Reynolds, Port City Javas director of brand development. At Port City Java, our Fairganic coffees are both.

The College of Management invited University Dining to locate a food-service outlet there to better serve its students, faculty and staff, as well as others who work and study in the Nelson Hall area. The café is located on the second floor of Nelson Commons, and is accessible from the courtyard between Nelson Hall and Clark Hall.

As a business school, we were particularly glad to support a home-state entrepreneurial enterprise, said Ira R. Weiss, dean of the college. The companys commitment to fair-trade practices and organic products also provides a real-world example of a sustainable business model for our students.
