Recruiter Attendance Up at Poole College’s Career Fair

Attendance by recruiters was up 20 percent at the NC State Poole College of Management’s Feb. 3, 2011, Spring Career and Internship Fair, with 76 employers represented. They were visited by 650 students.

Particularly noticeable among the recruiters was the number of ALUMNI flags on the recruiter’s name tags. Among those recruiter-alumni was Alexandra (Alex) Penny, who actually is still a student but working this semester in a human resources internship at BMW’s manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

As part of her internship, Penny has been traveling with BMW recruiters to a number of career fairs. Seeing her peers at NC State from the recruiters’ perspective made her “proud of her school,” she said. The students “walk up, resume in hand. They are really prepared. It’s been really rewarding for me to see – this is my school, this is where I’m from.” About 650 students attended the career fair.

Other alumni recruiters were Elcin Woodnow (B.S. Business Administration, 2006), assistant vice president of operations; Jim Crawford and Kim Luther, analysts, all with Credit Suisse.

Among companies returning to the Poole College career fair, after an absence of a year or two, were Caterpillar and Bank of America. Amazon was among the new recruiters participating this spring.

This was one of two career and internship fairs organized annually by career resources staff in the Poole College’s Office of Undergraduate Programs. The fall event is typically held in September or early October. Both career fairs are primarily for business students and alumni of the college, but all NC State University students and alumni are welcome participate. Recruiters interested in participating in future career fairs or arranging information sessions for undergraduate students at Poole College may contact Janet Rakes, undergraduate career coach.

A number of local media outlets stopped by to provide an update on the career picture for this spring’s graduates. Following are their stories.
