JR Shearin Receives NC State Alumnus of the Year Award

The award recognizes Shearin’s leadership and success in the accounting profession and his ongoing support of the NC State College of Management. In accepting the award, Shearin spoke of the influence of the college and its part in developing his own leadership style.

Shearin said he started at NC State as a business major, but during his sophomore year, Judith Jeffreys, former accounting professor, instilled in him an interest in accounting. He cited several faculty members who made a definite impression on him – from making him think he’d never pass his CPA exams to asking him why he would ever want to. But he cites Gil Zuckerman, professor of accounting, as the person who embodies the leadership characteristics that he himself holds as a standard, built on trust, serving as a role model, service and having a support system. Their relationship grew after graduation, and now Shearin calls Zuckerman “one of my trusted mentors, and our discussions go well beyond how I might recruit the best students for Deloitte, though we do talk about that.”
