Student Network Groups

Student Network Groups are an important part of each student’s first-year experience in the Poole College of Management.  While enrolled in Management 100 – Diversity, Professionalism and Academic Success in Management, students have the opportunity to be a member of a Student Network Group.  These groups have several purposes:

  • foster a sense of community, belonging and connection within the larger university
  • build an awareness of diversity and inclusivity among students
  • provide access to professional and student role models
  • provide students opportunities to develop networking skills

Students choose one or more Student Network Groups (SNGs) to participate in from a list provided during the first class.  Each group has at least one professional mentor, someone from the community who has an interest in working with the particular group and guiding them through their first semester and beyond.  In addition, upper-class students serve as student mentors to the groups.  During the semester, students attend cultural events and social networking opportunities with their group members, professional mentors, and student mentors.   Each group mentor helps to find and/or plan events for the students, identify needs of the particular group and to keep students informed of related news in the local and national community.

“The SNGs provide three levels of support that enable our incoming students to begin creating their own networks.  Through the interactions that take place in the SNGs, the students learn from each other and their peer mentors as they begin to share experiences as college students. The professional mentors bring the corporate, real world perspective into the conversation.”
