Shanghai Upon-the-Sea
Shanghai is the leading business capital in China. Founded as the city of international trade, Shanghai has grown to reach a population of over 24 million. Located on China’s central coast, it is a global financial hub and home to the Shanghai World Financial Center. It is also a largely metropolitan city known for its multicultural population and diverse city culture.
With many famous historical sites, the heart of Shanghai is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Across the Huangpu Riber is the Pudong area of Shanghai which features an unmatched skyline, including 632m Shanghai Tower and the 240 story Pearl TV Tower.
Curriculum
Given the complexity of learning Mandarin, students in the Chinese track will continue studying Mandarin while enrolled at SJTU. Initially students will complete some courses in English and others in Mandarin, progressing to the point of all courses being taught in Mandarin. We believe this structure gives students the skills they need to become fluent.
Housing
International Student Dormitories are allocated to students once their offers are accepted.
By living together in student dormitories, students are provided with opportunities to build friendships and help each other. Internet connection, electric outlets, running water, bathrooms and other necessities are all available in the rooms, though students will need to buy bottled water for drinking.
Currently, there are dormitories on both the Mingham and Xuhui campuses. Supermarkets, book stores and the university health clinic are all close to the dormitories.
Both single and double rooms are available. Public kitchen and laundry facilities are located in the dorms. Students may also find off-campus housing accommodations.
SJTU has six canteen style dining halls. The warm and welcoming staff serves students with fresh, healthy, and tasty meals with a variety of menu choices including Chinese and western food, local pasta, fast-food stir-fry, and halal food.
Internships
More than 500 multinational companies have regional headquarters in Shanghai, such as Lenovo, Alibaba, and Sany Group. Students will find their language skills to be extremely valuable as they navigate between interactions with Mandarin-speaking professionals and demand for English, the language of business.
