His passion for international education began with a high school trip to the Soviet Union, his first time on a plane, and has since grown into a lifelong commitment to helping students explore marketing through a global lens. In Buenos Aires, students dive into local business culture, meet entrepreneurs, and apply marketing theory through immersive, real-world projects.

International Experiences

2026 Maymester: Marketing Methods – Buenos Aires, Argentina (Faculty-led)

What inspired you to lead a study abroad program?

My love for international travel started with a high school trip to the Soviet Union. That experience had a lasting impact on me, and I wanted to create similar opportunities for students to grow personally and professionally through global learning.

Why do you enjoy teaching abroad with students?

Experiencing how marketing is done in different countries is SO invaluable; it demonstrates to the students the importance of not being ethnocentric and learning from others how to market globally.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming program?

The economy of Argentina continues to be problematic. Each year that we visit, we are able to witness how the different administrations impact the people and the environment of the country. The students are required to introduce a new offering (from the US) into a Latin American country and evaluate how this will be impacted locally performing a PESTEL analysis (political, economic, social, technology, environmental and legal).

What can students expect to learn from this experience?

In just three and a half weeks, students cover the equivalent of a full semester. Beyond marketing knowledge, they’ll gain cultural awareness, language exposure, and real-world experience interacting with local professionals and communities. I bet that if you asked the students who have attended a Maymester they would share that they learned more in that intense environment than if they took the course during a normal fall/spring semester.

Any favorite local experiences or recommendations for students?

Students love visiting Mendoza as part of the program, and often use their free weekend to explore Iguazu Falls or Patagonia. They also hear from Argentine entrepreneurs, marketing agencies, and a professor from Universidad de San Andrés who shares insights on the country’s business and political landscape.

What advice would you give to students preparing to study abroad?

It is important that students attend all of the orientation sessions beforehand, pack “lightly” and be open and flexible to new experiences. I have found that most of the students do not know any of the other students on the trip and they typically come home at the end of May with life-long friends!

How does international experience enhance a student’s business education or career prospects?

Recruiters consistently tell me they’re impressed by students who can speak to their international experiences. It shows adaptability, cultural awareness, and the ability to think globally, all key traits in today’s business world.

How is your course different when taught abroad?

Teaching marketing in Argentina is much more interactive than in a traditional classroom environment. I am with the students both in/out of the classroom while we are in Argentina, very often sharing meals and excursions. This kind of learning environment fosters a closer relationship between the teacher and the student.

Why You Should Go!

Faculty who travel with students during intensive programs like Maymester are uniquely positioned to write meaningful recommendations. We see how students engage both academically and socially. These are insights that help recruiters better understand their strengths.

Professor Tom Byrnes brings over a decade of global teaching experience to Poole Global’s Maymester program in Argentina.
