Full-time students can finish the program in 1 year, 18 months\u00a0or 2 years, depending on their own pace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Core Courses<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Students choosing this track\u00a0will complete a theory-based core sequence of\u00a0six courses:<\/p>\n<p>ECG 700: Fundamentals of Microeconomics<\/p>\n<p>ECG 703: Fundamentals of Macroeconomics<\/p>\n<p>ECG 765: Mathematical Methods for Economists<\/p>\n<p>ST 501: Fundamentals of Statistical Inference I<\/p>\n<p>ST 502: Fundamentals of Statistical Inference II<\/p>\n<p>ECG 750: Introduction to Econometric Methods<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Elective Courses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An additional four courses (12 credit hours) of electives are required. Students may simply select from courses listed below and other approved courses.\u00a0 But they also have the opportunity to concentrate their studies on one or multiple fields that match with their own interests.\u00a0 Finally, students with excellent first-year performance may opt to enter our PhD program in the second year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Concentration: Data Analytics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ECG 563: Applied Microeconometrics<\/p>\n<p>ECG 564: Big Data Econometrics\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DSC 495\/595: Special Topics in Data Science<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Concentration: Economic Policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ECG 590: Health Economics and Policy<\/p>\n<p>ARE 433: US Agricultural Policy<\/p>\n<p>ARE 590: Food Policy<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Concentration:\u00a0 Natural Resource &amp; Environmental Economics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ECG 515: Environmental and Resource Policy\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ARE 590: Environmental Entrepreneurship and Markets<\/p>\n<p>FOR 519: Forest Economics<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Concentration:\u00a0 Financial Economics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ECG 528: Options and Derivatives Pricing (Asset Pricing)<\/p>\n<p>ARE 590: Introduction to Commodity Futures Markets<\/p>\n<p>ARE 495: Investments, Portfolio Management and Retirement\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Concentration:\u00a0 International Economics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ECG 548: International Economics<\/p>\n<p>ARE 448: International Agricultural Trade<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other Electives:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ECG 590: Foundations of Capitalism<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Additional rules regarding the electives<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At least two courses (6 credit hours) must be at the 500 level or above.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Can take up to two courses (6 credit hours) at the 400 level or above from other departments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A minimum of two courses in a given area are required to\u00a0claim a concentration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cannot use the same course for multiple concentrations.<\/p>\n<h3>Certificate of completion of concentration(s):<\/h3>\n<p>Upon completion of the Master\u2019s program, students may request an official letter from the DGP. The letter will be on department letterhead, signed by the DGP, and will mention you by name, your degree program, and that you have successfully completed specific concentration(s).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thesis Option\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A thesis is required for the MS degree (Master of Science in Economics) rather than the MR degree (Master of Economics). Up to 6 credit hours of ECG 695 (Thesis Preparation) may be applied toward the\u00a0degree as electives (so only need to complete four other elective courses). The thesis requirement is met upon successfully passing a final oral exam. The oral exam consists of an oral defense of the completed written thesis before the student&#8217;s thesis advisory committee.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sample Curriculum<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although it is possible to finish the PhD-prep track within 1 year as the terminal master&#8217;s track, most of our students in this track\u00a0finish in\u00a0two years.
