Brian Newton Joins Poole College as Undergraduate Career Director

Brian Newton, of Wilson, N.C., has been named director of career and internship development for the Office of Undergraduate Programs at North Carolina State University’s Poole College of Management, the college announced today.

Newton comes to the college with over 20 years’ experience in higher education, focusing on career and leadership development. Most recently, he was associate director of The Career Center at East Carolina University (ECU). During his 10 years there, he worked with students in ECU’s colleges of allied health sciences, nursing, business, and technology and computer science. In addition to developing career-related services and programs, he expanded student and career services on ECU’s health and science campus. Prior to that, Newton was director of career services at Barton College in Wilson, N.C.

Newton has been a guest speaker and instructor on topics related to career development, including preparation for internships and field experiences, and has given invited presentations at conferences on student leadership and career development topics.

He is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, Southeastern Association of Colleges and Employers and North Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers, and a former president of the Wilson Human Resources Association.

Newton also is a member of the North Carolina Internship Council, and is a certified True Colors Basic Awareness facilitator. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Wilson Human Resources Association in 2000, and is a volunteer with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission since 2003.

He received his Master of Education degree in student personnel services in higher education and his bachelor’s degree in journalism, both from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, in 1989 and 1986, respectively.

Newton fills a vacancy at the college created with the departure of former director Brendalee McCarthy.
