College’s IMA Student Team is Finalist for National Competition

Members of the team – Sally Parker and Joe O’Brien, in the college’s Bachelor of Accounting program, and Joe Gaglione, who graduated this month with a bachelor’s in business administration and a minor in accounting – are now preparing for national competitions to be held June 7, during the IMA annual conference in Denver, Colo.

The competing teams enter a video of their presentations for the initial rounds. The NC State College of Management team’s video placed in the top ten in the first round, and the top four for the second round. As a finalist for the IMA Student Case Competition, the team members earned a gratis IMA conference registration, said Al Chen, professor of accounting and advisor of the college’s student IMA chapter.

The national competition involves a live PowerPoint presentation to a panel of judges the morning of June 7, and the winning team will be announced at a student/academic luncheon that afternoon.

Each team’s presentation is scheduled for 15 minutes, following by a question from the judges. Teams each have five minutes to prepare and deliver a response, a process designed to enable the judges to see how well the team “thinks on its feet,” Chen said. “This will help decide the overall winner.”
