Dual MBA-Engineering Degree Now Available at NC State University

The new MIE/MBA degree program announced today will begin in fall 2011, allowing students to obtain both a master’s degree in industrial engineering and an MBA in two years, selecting courses and concentrations from both graduate programs.

Students will select from Jenkins MBA concentrations that include biosciences management, entrepreneurship and technology commercialization, innovation management, marketing management and supply chain management, and engineering courses that include advanced manufacturing, ergonomic design, production systems, logistics, information systems, and other courses from the MIE curriculum. Students can complete the coursework in four or five semesters, focusing on core MBA courses in the first year and then core MIE courses in the second year. Details and application information are available online.

“Joint degrees are not unusual – other business schools offer them. But in the Jenkins MBA, we offer a unique and large mix,” said Dr. Steve Allen, associate dean for graduate programs and research in the NC State Poole College of Management and the college’s Jenkins Graduate School. “While other business programs offer graduate studies that blend engineering and management coursework into one degree program, NC State’s dual MIE/MBA degree program enables students to graduate within two years with two master’s degrees, with a solid knowledge base from both fields of study.”

“Industrial engineering is an extremely popular field,” said Dr. Paul Cohen, head of the Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State’s College of Engineering. “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently cited industrial engineering as the third fastest growing job market for engineers. Part of the field’s attraction is that industrial engineers understand how products are manufactured and how production is controlled and scheduled. They also know how to develop a supply chain. Adding business acumen and strategic thinking to this skill set should make them highly desirable employees.”

This is the latest addition to the joint degrees offered through the NC State Jenkins MBA program. NC State students in the following master’s programs may also pursue joint MBA degrees in Poole College’s Jenkins Graduate School: Master of Biomanufacturing, Master of Microbial Biotechnology, Master of Biomanufacturing, Master of Accounting, Master of Global, Innovation Management, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
