Execs to Discuss Use of Big Data Analytics for Top Line Growth at CIMS Meeting; Register by Apr. 5

The use of big data analytics in driving innovation is a key area of study for researchers and industry partners of the Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS) at North Carolina State University’s Poole College of Management.

Executives from three companies collaborating with CIMS on this research will discuss outcomes and future plans at an Executive Overview panel session, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, at the new James B. Hunt Jr. Library, 1070 Partners Way on NC State’s Centennial Campus. The panelists are from Air Products and Chemicals, Kelly Services, and Pentair Water Pool and Spa.

This session is open to the public at no charge, but registration is required by April 5. Registration and other details are available on the CIMS events web page. Registration costs are waived for NC State students, faculty and staff.

The panel discussion marks the start of CIMS’s spring 2013 meeting, which continues through April 17. Sessions on April 17, at the Marriott City Center, 500 Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, include indepth presentations about the company projects discussed in the Executive Overview.

“To make big data analytics really work for you, it is less about the technology and more – much more – about the managerial issues these technologies bring to the surface,” Paul Mugge, executive director of CIMS. “During our Executive Overview, our industry panel will provide concrete examples of how you can apply big data analytics to your own operation,” he said. “The discussion will include a series of short industry case studies and the current streams of faculty research that illustrate our approach to answering the really tough business questions.” This research was led by faculty in NC State’s Poole College of Management and College of Engineering.

CIMS’s work in big data analytics has also involved Poole College student teams in its Jenkins graduate programs – the master of accounting, master of business administration and master of global innovation management programs. This spring, the college began to teach a new graduate course in big data applications to innovation management.

Summaries of student team projects will be presented during a reception and student project showcase on April 16, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the downtown Marriott.

A broader discussion of innovation at NC State University is the topic of a dinner presentation at the Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center, 2450 Alumni Drive on NC State’s Centennial Campus. Dr. Craig Thompson Friend, director of Public History at NC State, will discuss “Innovation in NC State's Early Years.” The dinner begins at 7:00 p.m.

Full reports about the company projects discussed in the Executive Overview are among the presentations on the agenda for April 17, along with reports on other research conducted by CIMS research fellows and academic, company partners, and student teams.

The complete agenda and registration details are available at the CIMS’s events web page: http://cims.ncsu.edu/events. Registration is requested by April 5. Cost for the two-day meeting is $200; other rates apply if registering for individual components of the meeting, as follows.
