Graduate Economics Program to Host Open House for Prospective Students

“We’re very excited about our second annual Open House,” said Tamah Morant, director of the program which is offered jointly by the NC State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Management. “Last year’s first open house was quite successful and the students attending had very positive things to say about the experience,” she said.

Prospective students who attend will have the opportunity to learn more about the graduate economics program and about NC State in general. Besides getting to know the graduate program itself, they will also meet the program’s faculty and current students.

The graduate economics faculty from both the College of Management and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will be at the open house. Visitors will attend a number of sessions with the faculty members, aligned with those who teach and conduct research in their areas of interest. Faculty members also will discuss and describe the various fields of concentration offered, the courses in those fields and the research currently being conducted. Visitors also have the opportunity to attend classes or attend smaller, more personal sessions with faculty members based to their area of research interest.

There will also be time for prospective students to talk with the program’s current graduate students in a relaxed atmosphere, Morant said. “Through this open forum, they can gain a better perspective on how the present students feel about the program and how the program is meeting their needs,” she said. The current graduate students will also provide a campus tour and a concentrations workshop.

“At the open house, visitors get a feel for how welcoming and supportive the graduate program is,” she said. “They are exposed to the great mix of theoretical training and application that makes up the curriculum as well as the hands-on approach of its faculty. I believe that potential students walk away from the open house with an understanding that NC State’s graduate economics program takes great pride in its successes and in turning out well prepared graduates,” Morant said.

“These visiting students will leave with all the information they need to make an informed decision about whether the Graduate Economics Program at NC State is the right fit for them.”
