Hamilton Scholars Preparing for Roles in Cross-cultural Settings

The Alexander Hamilton Scholars Program – a dual degree program offered jointly by the Poole College of Management and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) at North Carolina State University – admitted 23 new members in January.

Hamilton Scholars is a unique academic program that includes opportunities for student experiences outside the classroom, said Robert Sandruck, director of international programs for Poole College and co-director of the Hamilton Scholars.

In addition to being an academic program, Hamilton Scholars also is a registered student organization at NC State. However, the academic and student organization aspects operate as one entity, Sandruck said.

Students in the program participate in at least three events each semester. These have included the CHASS Dual Degree Dinner, a global information session and organizational meetings. This week, the Hamilton Scholars will be attending a Global Career Panel with global business leaders from SAS, Moviecity, The Body Shop, and Freutenberg, IT speaking. The event is only for current Hamilton Scholars.

The Hamilton Scholars also offers opportunities for program involvement and leadership development, with student officers and members serving on the following committees: publicity, fundraising, service and social committee.

The aim of this dual degree program is to produce well-rounded business professionals with skills to function successfully in cross-cultural settings, Sandruck said. He coordinates Hamilton Scholar activities in collaboration with Seth Murray, teaching assistant professor and co-director of the Alexander Hamilton Scholars.

All Hamilton Scholars are required to study abroad. We currently have students studying around the world, including at universities in China, Chile, and Spain, Sandruck said.

The program draws highly motivated students who complete the degree requirements for both a bachelor of science degree in business administration, accounting or economics or a bachelor of arts in economics, and a bachelor of arts degree in international studies from CHASS. The international studies degree offers eight concentrations, each focusing on a specific area of the world. Details of the academic options are available online at the Hamilton Scholars website.
