Holiday Food Drives Under Way in Nelson Hall

The Personal Finance Club members are collecting food to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and the Accounting Society is collecting for the Central North Carolina Food Bank.

“After learning from the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina that more than 400,000 people are at risk for hunger in the 34 counties that they serve – and 34 percent of those are children – the club decided to make a difference,” said Debbie Carroll, accounting senior and secretary of the Personal Finance Club. The club has a goal of collecting 1,000 cans of food or cash equivalent for needy people in the Raleigh area. They will be collecting contributions until exams start next week. Following are some of the most needed items.

  • Canned meals
  • Canned fruits or vegetables
  • Peanut butter

The Personal Finance Club’s drop off boxes are located at the two second floor entrances to Nelson Hall and on the first floor. In addition, club members will be stationed in the Nelson Commons to collect cash or checks during the lunch hour. Each $1 contribution converts to $8 of for the community. “This is a remarkable opportunity to effectively help those in need of food,” Carroll said. “It’s also exciting because faculty, students and staff can contribute in their own way, by writing a check or bringing in food items.” Those who are not on campus but interested in contributing to the drive may send checks payable to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina to: Attn: Bill Sloan, Campus Box 7229, NCSU, Raleigh, NC, 27695.

The Student Accounting Association’s drop off box is located outside the Department of Accounting office on the third floor of Nelson Hall. They are collecting similar food items, as well as dry goods such as pasta, rice and dried beans, personal hygiene items, and paper products. They are collecting for the Central North Carolina Food Bank.
