HR Scholarship Honors NC State Alumna

It also was a time for them to recognize one individual who had a significant impact on their lives. The late Janice F. Sharp, SPHR, an NC State alumna, had been the state HR Games coordinator for nine years prior to her death in December 2009. Her husband Ed Sharp served as master scorekeeper for most of those years, and was back in that roll Saturday, along with his two sons Chas and Hunter.

Before beginning the games, Teresa Bailey, NCSHRM State Council Director, announced that Sharp’s employer, WRAL, had created a $10,000 scholarship in her honor.

“North Carolina has the best HR Games in the nation, and a lot of this is because of what she has done,” said Michele Langley, a College of Management alumna and coordinator of this year’s North Carolina HR Games. “Many of the volunteers here today are past HR Game participants.” Among those was Sarah Johnston, who was an NC State SHRM chapter member throughout her years at the College of Management. She coordinated the professional volunteers for this year’s games.

The NCSHRM Jan Sharp Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a business student in North Carolina pursing a bachelor’s degree in HR or any business program. In keeping with Sharp’s passion and spirit, the scholarship is tailored to meet what she felt was important in a business professional and a professional student, especially volunteering and leadership.

Each year one $1,000 scholarship will be rewarded to student who meets the scholarship’s criteria.

Sharp graduated from NC State in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Natural Resources. Her distinguished career included serving as vice president of human resources at Capital Broadcasting Company.

She also served as collegiate relations director of the North Carolina State Council for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) from 1997- 2006. She was a member of the Society of Human Resources Management since 1988, and served on the board for Raleigh-Wake Human Resource Management Association (RWHRMA) from 1990-1997, including president in 1995. She had received the Robert F. McLain Award from RWHRMA in 2000 for outstanding service to the chapter, the HR Professional of the Year from the state of North Carolina in 2000, and Outstanding Service Award from North Carolina State SHRM in 2006.

Winners of the competition are: first place, Peace College (White); second place, University of North Carolina Wilmington (Teal); third place, University of North Carolina Wilmington (Gold), and fourth place, Peace College (Green). Also, the Collegiality Award went to Meredith College (Iris).
