From its start in 1992, Poole College has been developing a portfolio of graduate programs that build on the strengths of NC State University and, more recently, selected global partners. These now include the Graduate Economics Program, Master of Business Administration (initially Master of Science in Management), Master of Accounting; Master of Global Innovation Management (MGIM) and MGIM-Luxury Management. In 2007, the college's graduate programs collectively were named the Jenkins Graduate School of Management in recognition of a major gift made to the college in 2007 by Ben Jenkins, vice-chairman and president of the general bank, Wachovia (retired).

GRADUATE ECONOMICS PROGRAM

The Graduate Economics Program was the first graduate program in the new college, providing masters' and doctoral degrees in economics. “Graduate Economics was in good shape when the college was created and continues to be strong,” said Dr. Steve Allen, Poole College’s associate dean for the Jenkins Graduate School and professor of economics and management, innovation and entrepreneurship and associate dean for research.

The Graduate Economics Program is delivered jointly by economics faculty in the Department of Economics in Poole College and the Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics (ARE) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). “It made sense for the two economics departments to teach these graduate programs jointly, since both are very applied,” Allen said. JENKINS MASTER OF ACCOUNTING: THE COLLEGE’S FIRST NEW GRADUATE PROGRAM

Accounting courses have been taught at NC State University since before there was a College of Management, with the accounting department’s founding department head, Dr. Carl Messere, and others forging strong connections with professionals in the area. Those early relationships have thrived, leading to scholarships, internships, faculty support and research opportunities, as well as a strong career pipeline for today's accounting program graduates. In 1994, two years after the College of Management was established, the faculty created the college’s first new graduate program, the Master of Accounting (MAC) program, now the NC State Jenkins MAC Program. MSM to MBA: The Evolution of Graduate Management Education

The first new graduate management program in NC State's College of Management was the Master of Science in Management (MSM), established in 1993. “MSM degrees were the flagship programs at major universities at the time – 1993 to 1995,” Allen said. With its fledgling faculty, the new college offered the basic graduate courses in management – marketing, finance, management – and a larger number of technical course options in areas such as textiles or operations,” he said. Its curriculum was managed by a board of faculty who represented about 10 departments from across the university.

But to have the students be competitive as management graduates, the program needed to change, Allen said. “We needed to add more management classes to the curriculum, and to restructure its governance so that it was led by faculty in the College of Management,” he said. In 2002, shifting needs in business and industry led to a shift in the MSM program – to the Master of Business Administration. Ongoing changes in the global business enviornment led to addtional updates. The Jenkins MBA now includes the full time MBA; the Professional MBA delivered at two locations: at Poole College on NC State's main campus and at the Jenkins MBA site in Research Triangle Park; and the Online Professional MBA. The program now also offers a dozen options for students to specialize in their studies, with six concentrations and six dual degrees. MASTER OF GLOBAL INNOVATION MANAGEMENT

In the past few years, Poole College’s Jenkins Graduate Programs leadership team has identified program opportunities built on faculty expertise at the intersection of innovation and management. In 2007, the college partnered with IAE Graduate School of Management, part of the Université Paul Cézanne in Aix, France, to offer a one year, dual-degree Master of Global Innovation Management (MGIM) program. Students study in France in the fall semester, and then at NC State's Poole College in the spring. They also complete an international internship in the summer.
