Jenkins MBA Breaks into Bloomberg Businessweek’s Full Time Program Rankings

The full time Jenkins MBA program in the North Carolina State University Poole College of Management was ranked #63 in the U.S. by Bloomberg Businessweek in its biennial ranking of top business schools’ full time MBA programs. The rankings were published by Bloomberg online on Nov. 15, 2012. This is the first time the Jenkins MBA full time program qualified for ranking by Bloomberg Businessweek.

The publication had invited 114 schools globally to participate in the survey used to determine the rankings. Of those, 82 are in the U.S. and the rest in Canada, Europe and Asia.

“This is the first time our full-time Jenkins MBA was eligible to be listed in the Bloomberg Businessweek ranking of full-time MBA programs,” said Dr. Steve Allen, associate dean for graduate programs and research at the NC State Poole College of Management.

Enrollment size and program quality are among the criteria used by Bloomberg Businessweek when selecting the schools that are included in the ranking.

“This has been one of the key long-term goals of our program,” Allen said. “It would not have been possible without the concerted efforts of faculty and staff to grow our program’s enrollment and prepare our students for success over a sustained period. Our Jenkins MBA program is only 10 years old, so getting on this list is a significant achievement.” Businessweek has been ranking business schools for 24 years.

Forty-five percent of its ranking is based on student satisfaction, 45 percent on employer satisfaction and 10 percent on faculty research productivity per capita.

“We also did well in one dimension that did not enter into the rankings, but is important to students: affordability,” Allen said. “Only eight programs had lower tuition and fees than we do.”

The full time Jenkins MBA program has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report for the past several years; most recently, it was ranked #78 by that publication.

Since it was established in 2002, the NC State Jenkins MBA program has been continually improving its academic program and student services. It launched an online MBA option in fall 2011, which includes one onsite residency and a residency in China; has expanded its part-time MBA program, adding a new facility in Research Triangle Park, N.C.; added short courses to provide additional learning opportunities; and has enhanced its career development and student services with updated resources and additional professional staff support.

“We are glad to be in the rankings with business schools that have a long-established reputation, and are committed to continually improving our programs, offering graduate management education that is affordable and relevant for today’s technology driven global business environment.”

Bloomberg Businessweek will conduct its next survey of full-time MBA programs in 2014. It will report on its survey of part time MBA programs in 2013. The Jenkins part time MBA program had been ranked #30 in the U.S. by Blooomberg Businessweek in 2011, Allen said.

The complete ranking of full-time MBA programs is featured on Businessweek.com. The publication is highlighting the top 30 U.S. schools and the top 10 international programs in its Nov. 19-25, 2012, print edition. The redesigned Businessweek.com B-School section has undergone its biggest overhaul since its launch in 1998, providing tools and resources that allow people to compare programs based on enrollment, tuition and costs, academics, student life, careers and alumni.

Following is the methodology for this survey.

The Bloomberg Businessweek ranking is based on three elements: a survey of newly minted MBAs, a poll of corporate recruiters, and an evaluation of faculty research output. The MBA survey, which measures satisfaction with all aspects of the b-school experience, is combined with two previous MBA surveys. The corporate poll, which asks recruiters to identify the schools that produce the best graduates, is also combined with two previous recruiter surveys. Finally, Bloomberg Businessweek tallies the number of articles published by each school’s faculty in 20 top journals and reviews of their books in three national publications. The total for faculty size is then adjusted and an intellectual-capital rating is assigned for each school. The MBA surveys and the recruiter polls each contribute 45% to the final ranking, with the intellectual-capital ranking contributing the final 10%.
