Mark Beasley Named to 2012 NACD Directorship 100

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 1, 2012)  Dr. Mark Beasley, Deloitte Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and director of the ERM Initiative at North Carolina State University Poole College of Management, has been named to the 2012 National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Directorship 100 in recognition of his exemplary leadership in the boardroom and promoting the highest standards of corporate governance. The NACD Directorship 100 recognizes the most influential leaders in the boardroom and corporate governance community.

My interactions with boards of directors is hugely impacting my teaching and research, said Beasley. ERM is a major corporate governance issue and boards are struggling to know what to do. Those perspectives are used in my classroom and my speaking on the topic helps me provide real-world context to all the conceptual ideas we might cover.

Beasley did not know that he was receiving the award beforehand. However, when asked as to why he was chosen, he offered some of his thoughts. I imagine what caught their eye is a collection of things. Our ERM Initiative is fairly wide known and embraced at a national level. So all the work we are doing, programs we host, our website and newsletters are fairly well tracked. Also, he said,I speak at a lot of conferences including some director conferences. For example, I served as moderator for a live webinar session in July, when I interviewed Senator Paul Sarbanes and Representative Mike Oxley on the 10th anniversary of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

His earlier professional experience with the COSO board may also have been a factor. My service on the board of COSO is something directors and the NACD would know about, though I've retired from that now, he said. He also had been “a part of the local NACD chapter here in the RTP and a speaker or panelist at some of their events.”

Beasley and other honorees were recognized during a gala dinner at the sixth annual NACD Directorship 100 Forum on Nov. 27, 2012, in New York City.

The NACD Directorship 100 honorees represent the most influential leaders who set the right tone in the boardroom, enabling sustainable growth and innovation around the globe, said Ken Daly, president and CEO of NACD.These stewards of exemplary board leadership serve as role models for others, and it is important for NACD to recognize their contributions in the boardroom and to corporate governance.
