NC State Academic All-American excels in the classroom and on the court

For the third straight season, senior forward Kody Burke of the No. 14 NC State women's basketball team (22-4, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) has been named a Capital One Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday, February 20, 2014.

Burke, the only ACC student-athlete represented on the women's first or second teams, is a senior in NC State’s Poole College of Management. She has a 3.93 overall GPA in her coursework and expects to graduate in May 2014 with a bachelor’s in business administration and a concentration in finance.

“As a student, she has always been amazing to work with,” said Dr. Lauren Brown, her academic advisor in Poole College.

“She is completely on top of everything, asks questions and meets deadlines, and she’s genuinely nice. Given the number of students we have as advisors, to have someone stand out is special,” Brown said, noting that Burke has a 3.93 overall GPA in her coursework.

On the court, Burke has been a standout athlete. She earned first team honors by the organization after being named to the third team during the 2012-13 and 2011-12 seasons. She is just the third NC State women's basketball player to earn the prestigious honor of being named to the first team, joining Marissa Kastanek (2013) and Jennifer Howard (1996 and 1997).

Burke is in the final year of a stellar career with the Wolfpack. Within NC State's record books, she ranks second with 188 career blocks, 10th with 787 career rebounds, tied for 12th with 125 games played, and 16th with 1,494 career points.

Her senior season has been her most productive, as she is currently averaging 15 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 46.1 percent from the field. She has scored in double figures during 22 of State's 26 games this season while frequently leading the team in points (eight times) and rebounding (10 times).
