New student orientation begins with Summer START

New student orientation begins this week for NC State and the Poole College of Management. More than 530 new undergraduate students are expected to complete orientation during the summer’s eight sessions that begin on June 25. Included are 351 freshmen and 185 transfer students.

In addition, on Monday, June 23, Poole College welcomed 17 first-year students who are taking advantage of the university’s Summer START program.

The university-wide living and learning experience – now in its fifth year – was designed to help freshmen transition from high school to college while completing up to eight credit hours of university coursework and getting to know the NC State and Raleigh environment.

“The early start on coursework is particularly helpful for students planning to 'get ahead of the Pack,” said Roshaunda Breeden, Poole College coordinator of diversity and student involvement. She also is coordinator for the college’s Summer START orientation this year.

The students met with Poole College advisors Monday and on Tuesday, completed course registration for their first academic year at NC State. They also have been participating in a range of Summer START campus orientation activities.

The Summer START students are taking their round of classes during the university’s Summer Session 2, which begins June 26. The Summer START students registered for one or more courses in mathematics; English; communications; science, technology and society; and history. They also will participate in a range of activities organized for the Summer START participants by the university’s Accelerated Summer Academic Programs staff.

“This Summer START program is a phenomenal initiative for the Poole students who elected to participate,” Breeden said. “They get to transition into campus life before the other first-year Poole College students arrive. They also get to experience smaller class sizes and earn credits ahead of schedule, leaving them time to possibly add a minor or study abroad,” she said.

“Our office also will provide students who are participating with access to make appointments with their academic advisors, workshops on college success, and other fun activities over the summer. We want to put this extra time to good use,” Breeden said.

Orientation for Freshman and Transfer Students

On June 25, the college welcomes new students and parents for the first of its student and parent orientation sessions. Each incoming student, along with parents, registers for a particular session at the university’s New Student Program website.
