Poole Accounting Students are Finalists in Government Finance Case Challenge

A team of four Poole College undergraduate students is heading to Washington, D.C., in February for the Sixth Annual Association of Government Accountants (AGA) Government Finance Case Challenge.

Team members Happiness Rugumamu, Adam Johnson, Jackson Benjamin King, and Claudene Fajarito had collaborated to analyze and develop a written response to a case centered on the creation of a citizen-centric report for a U.S. city, county government or a school district. Their advisor for the competition is Scott Showalter, professor of practice in Poole College’s Department of Accounting.

The team scored in the top three nationwide, earning the members a scholarship to attend the AGA’s 11th Annual NCL: Strategic Innovation for Government Leaders, set for February 12-13 in Washington, D.C. Twelve schools had participated in the competition, which began on Nov. 12, 2012.

The top teams will be presenting their finalized solutions on February 12 before a panel of federal, state, and local government leaders, corporate partners and chief financial officers. The winning teams will be announced at the awards luncheon on the final day of the conference. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning team and each student participant will receive a free one-year membership to AGA.

The competition experience is designed to challenge students’ moral reasoning, raise their awareness of the importance of government accountability and open doors to a future career in government. It also provides the students an opportunity to network professionally.
