Poole College’s Sustainability Initiative Director joins Leadership North Carolina
Poole College Sustainability Initiative Director Jessica Thomas has been selected to join the 2014-15 class of Leadership North Carolina (LNC), the state’s premier leadership engagement program. She will join 54 other civic and community leaders from across the state in Class XXII.
The Leadership North Carolina Program cultivates a network of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences who share a deep commitment to the state and seeks to "inform, develop, and engage committed leaders by broadening their understanding of and involvement in issues and opportunities facing North Carolina," Thomas said. More than 900 professionals have graduated from the program, many of whom are serving in senior business and government leadership positions.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for me to strengthen my contribution to North Carolina and its future," Thomas said. "I know that this experience will make me a more effective leader."
Each year, through a rigorous selection process, LNC chooses a class of established and emerging leaders from across the state to participate in the program. This year’s class includes top leaders from the government, business, nonprofit, and education sectors. Over the course of six two-and-a-half day sessions, the participants will learn about issues critical to the state through discussions with top officials and professionals, field trips, and experiential learning activities.
LNC’s sessions focus on five key areas –economic development, education, environment, government, and health and human services – that provide participants new insight into North Carolina’s strengths and challenges and prepares them to develop their own action plans for ways they can improve and empower their communities and the state as a whole. LNC sessions are held around the state, highlighting the social, geographic, and economic diversity of North Carolina.
The members of Class XXII met in Boone, N.C., in October for their orientation session, where they were welcomed at a reception by Chancellor Sheri N. Everts of Appalachian State University. The group will meet in Raleigh in November for the government session and in Rutherford County in December for the Duke Energy Economic Development session. The group’s remaining sessions will be held in Charlotte, Greenville, and High Point.
