Poole College Announces Jenkins MBA Program Recipients of Supply Chain Fellowships
Six MBA students in the NC State Poole College’s Jenkins Graduate School have been working this semester on special projects through the college’s Supply Chain Resource Cooperative (SCRC) Fellowship program.
Clyde Crider, co-director of the SCRC, said the fellowships were awarded to outstanding first- and second-year MBA students aspiring to careers in the supply chain industry.
“There is strong demand within the global supply chain community for the next generation of sharp, experienced supply chain professionals who will become tomorrow’s leaders,” Crider said. “This fellowship program provides a select group of our MBA students interested in this career path the opportunity to work with companies and the SCRC on projects related to the industry, as part of their fellowship award.”
The 2011 fellowships were awarded to three first-year Jenkins MBA students, and three second-year Jenkins MBA students. Two of the fellowships are sponsored by SCRC partner company.
The first-year fellows are:
- Christopher Dyke, SCRC Fellow, working on practicum projects with SCRC partner companies Foodbuy and Novozymes
- Jeffrey Lorenson, Caterpillar Fellow, working on logistics and transportation assignments for Caterpillar
- Michael Westrich, Caterpillar Fellow, working on procurement and sourcing assignments for Caterpillar
The second-year fellows are:
- Sarah Gilbert, SCRC Fellow, working on two practicum projects for SCRC partner company Lenovo
- Gorav Sangal, Caterpillar Fellow, working on receiving and warehousing assignments
- Samuel Kliewer, Duke Energy Fellow, working on procurement, sourcing, and maintenance, repair and operations projects for Duke Energy.
“The expectation for the students is they will deliver real, bottom-line value to their fellowship mentors,” Crider said. “At the same time, we encourage our corporate mentors to provide knowledge, guidance and experience that will mold our fellows into future supply chain leaders by the time they graduate,” he said.
To qualify for the SCRC Fellowship program, candidates must be full-time students in Poole College’s Jenkins MBA program, pursuing a supply chain concentration. They also must be able to work 20 hours a week with one of the SCRC corporate partners: Duke Energy, Caterpillar and the SCRC.
The SCRC Fellows receive tuition support, a financial stipend and benefits during the academic year. They also receive mentoring and advising by SCRC faculty and corporate supply chain executives. Their work with the companies also may open the door to career opportunities, Crider said.
“I am very proud of this year’s fellowship team and am especially excited about the supply chain work experience each fellow is receiving from the work they are doing with our partner companies,” he said.
Crider explains that a key benefit for SCRC partner companies participating in the SCRC Fellows program is that it enables them “to engage and network with outstanding MBA supply chain management students, extending their resources while also helping to build a pipeline of talented future recruits.”
Currently, he said, “industry demand exceeds the supply of top supply chain students who possess the academic credentials, relevant work experience, business and analytical skills and leadership qualities that will enable them to enter the work force and hit the ground running.” Feedback from current partners is clear, he said. “They want our graduates to have it all – academic credentials, supply chain work experience, analytical and problem-solving skills and leadership skills,” Crider said.
“Toward that end, the SCRC hopes to continue offering fellowships each year,” Crider added.
