Poole College Dean Ira Weiss Elected President of IPBS

Dr. Ira R. Weiss, dean of the North Carolina State University Poole College of Management in Raleigh, N.C., was elected president of the International Partnership of Business Schools (IPBS) during its fall 2011 meeting held at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICADE, Madrid, Spain. Poole College joined IPBS in 2009.

Also elected to leadership roles were Dr. Ottmar Schneck, dean of the European School of Business (ESB) at Reutlingen University, Germany, vice president; Dr. Maurizo Luigi Baussola, dean of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in Piacenza, Italy, treasurer; and Dr. Francois Bonvalet, director, Reims Management School, Reims, France, secretary.

“I commend both the vision and the work of those who have led IPBS since it was established in the mid-1970’s under the name of the European Partnership of Business Schools,” Weiss said, adding that the organization adopted its current name in 1994, when U.S. and Mexican schools joined.

IPBS has created a great collaborative model that is providing students from all our partner schools unparalleled opportunities for dual degrees, language and cultural mastery, and global internship experiences,” he said. “I look forward to serving with the leadership team as we expand the IPBS network into South America, Asia, Eastern Europe and beyond.”

That growth – including expanding the network to include 10 to 15 additional universities, particularly in Brazil, China, India, as well as Russia and the U.S.A. – was among the topics discussed by the deans and program directors at their fall meeting. Potential new partners, one from Russia and one from the U.S.A., attended the recent meeting. Additional potential partners will be invited to IPBS’s next meeting in March 2012, to be held in Reims, France.

“By expanding the number of countries represented through the IPBS, we are each offering our students new opportunities to see first-hand how changes in the global economy are impacting countries and commerce. This kind of experience is vital for our students who will be working in an increasingly global marketplace,” Weiss said.
