Poole College welcomes Class of 2020

Orientation has been under way since June 22 for 403 freshmen and 150 transfer students who are joining the NC State Poole College of Management this fall.

They are a select group of students, said Bonnie Yarboro, assistant director for admissions at Poole College, noting that the incoming class was selected from more than 3500 students that had applied to the college.

The new students are coming from 33 states in the U.S. and a few other countries. Their range of high school activities indicates they already understand the value of being involved outside the classroom – something that is stressed at Poole College.

The class of 2020 includes high school varsity athletes, student body presidents, community volunteers, and members of National Honor Society and DECA. There also are a few business owners, DJs and a licensed pilot.

Students are encouraged to build on these experiences at Poole College, said Tamah Morant, associate dean for undergraduate programs. “It’s not only about coursework,” she has been telling parents and students attending orientation.

The college’s leadership team and advising staff encourage all students to participate in experiential learning through their coursework as well as outside activities offered by the 25-plus business-related student organizations at Poole College and more than 100 others across campus.

They also are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to study business in other countries, through the college’s many international programs offered in partnership with business schools in China, France, Germany, Spain and other countries.

Helping the new students navigate life on campus are Poole College’s Peer Leaders – sophomore, juniors and seniors who are giving back by being a friendly face among the large student population at NC State. The Peer Leaders have been helping new students register for their first semester courses during orientation and will continue to be available to the new students throughout the fall semester.

Orientation sessions for Poole College first-year students ends June 28. Final orientation sessions for transfer students will be held July 8 and July 22.
