Poole College’s SHRM Student Chapter Earns Superior Merit Award for 2010-11 Achievements

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) organization at NC State’s Poole College of Management was among 109 student chapters earning a Superior Merit Award for its accomplishments in the 2010-2011 academic year.

The award recipients were announced at SHRM’s 2011 national student conference held in Las Vegas, Nev. In June 2011.

“I am very proud of the superior merit award received by our student chapter this past year,” said Clint Davidson, Poole College human resources lecturer in the college’s Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and faculty advisor for the student organization.

“The students who are members of the SHRM student chapter of the Poole College of Management participate in professional development experiences that add to their classroom learning,” Davidson said. “These young people are preparing themselves for attractive professional opportunities in talent management for some of the best organizations, both for profit and not for profit. “

The professional SHRM organization has more than 450 affiliated student chapters in the U.S., and award levels are based on chapter size. As one of the larger student chapters, with more than 60 members, the Poole College organization was required to complete at least 50 of 70 activities to earn a Superior Merit Award.

Poole College’s SHRM student chapter consistently has from 60 to 90 student members each year. The club’s monthly meetings feature speakers who discuss various aspects of the human resources profession. Members also participate in projects, such as community fund raising, site visits to area employers and competitive collegiate games on human resources topics.

Poole College SHRM officers leading the award-winning chapter last year were Robert Martin, president; Amber Mcgraw, vice president, administration; Loid Atkinson, vice president, membership; Michael Verala, vice president, finance; Francis Crawford and Aja Daniels, co-vice presidents, events and programs; Ashley Lee, vice president, professional development; and Diane Sexton, vice president, publicity.
