Poole College’s undergraduate HRM curriculum recertified as following SHRM guidelines

The undergraduate concentration in human resources management (HRM) in the NC State University Poole College of Management has been recertified as being aligned with educational guidelines recommended by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management.

SHRM’s recommended guidelines for HR education reflect common agreement – among HR faculty, students and practitioners who hire HR degree program graduates – regarding the minimum standards that constitute a broad and deep HR education.

Poole College’s faculty teaches human resources as a concentration with four courses in the college’s bachelor of business administration degree program. About 50 students typically graduate from the program each year, said Dr. Paul Mulvey, area coordinator for human resources faculty in the college’s Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The students’ personal and professional development in the classroom is complemented by involvement in the college’s student SHRM chapter, which is consistently recognized as a top chapter nationally. The college was notified this week that the student chapter received the Superior Merit award from the national SHRM for its excellence and achievement during the 2012-2013 Student Chapter Merit Award year.

Poole College’s undergraduate HRM curriculum was first certified as being aligned with the guidelines in 2010. Its curriculum was reassessed and recertified in May 2013. Poole College is one of three colleges in North Carolina on SHRM’s list of bachelor of business administration programs with HR concentrations aligned with the recommended guidelines

The SHRM guidelines were initially set in 2005, and have been revalidated every three years. Additional information about the guidelines is available on the SHRM website.

In setting the guidelines, SHRM stressed the importance of educational requirements for those entering the HR profession. Since starting the curriculum template in 2006, SHRM has established an alliance with AACSB International, the accrediting body for business schools. Poole College also is AACSB accredited.

“Effective human resources management provides today’s organizations a true competitive advantage in the war for top talent,” said Dr. Bradley Kirkman, head of the Poole College Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. “We prepare our HRM students to tackle these challenges head-on.”
