Poole’s Shack-a-Thon Team Aims to Beat 2011 Total

It’s late September, and that means it’s time for NC State’s annual ShackaThon on the Brickyard. Poole College is once again among the NC State student groups and colleges represented in this annual fundraiser for the university’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Ashley Myers, events and marketing coordinator for Poole’s Shack team this year, said the team aims to surpass the $5,263 it raised from donations and other fundraising for Habitat for Humanity. The college’s team was the event’s top fundraiser for the third year in a row, “so we’re going for a three-peat,” she said. Following are contribution totals to date.

  • Tuesday evening, Sept. 25 | $1,840
  • Thursday evening, Sept. 27 | $2,265
  • Friday Morning, Sept. 28 | $3,500*

Note: Tuesday and Thursday amounts reflect online giving only. Friday’s total includes proceeds from various other related fundraising activities.

Contributions can be made at the Poole College shack or online through the university’s Habitat for Humanity online giving page. Donors may also post a note, and view the scrolling Honor Roll acknowledging donor support.

Beyond fundraising, said Samantha Ballard, Poole’s Shack-a-Thon 2012 coordinator, ““one of our big goals for this year is to hit home with why we’re actually living in the shack. We want students to realize the hardships homeless people go through every day, and never take for granted the amenities we go home to every night.”

The student Shack-a-Thon team also aims to “involve the entire college this year, regardless of their club or class (year) affiliations,” Myers said.

By 3 p.m. Sunday, the shack building team had completed the structure and was putting final touches on their painting of the Poole College shack. The construction crew used as much recycled material from last year as possible when building the structure this year, Myers said.

A new addition to the design is a wall where Poole students can add their handprint. That’s one of the new additions to the fundraising activities this year. Returning activities include a bake sale and, of course, students occupying the shack in shifts throughout the week.

Shack Activity Schedule

The full schedule has numerous ways to support the Poole College shack and join in the activities. The Shack-a-Thon is open on the Brickyard dates from 8 .am.
