Rachel Mastro receives scholarship from NCSHRM

Rachel Mastro, an NC State Poole College of Management senior majoring in psychology and business administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management, received the $1,000 NCSHRM State Council Jan Sharp Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, endowed by Capitol Broadcasting Company, is awarded by the North Carolina State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (NCSHRM). Service and involvement in the human resources field are among qualifications for the scholarship.

In her application essay, Mastro wrote that she did not know human resources would be her chosen profession when she started college. That came after two years of undergraduate studies, several changes of her major and multiple internships. Four of the internships were in HR positions, including one at Boeing in summer 2013, and an eight-month full-time co-op at BMW Manufacturing in Greenville, S.C.

Mastro has been active in Poole College’s student chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and is serving as president for the fall 2013 semester. She also has been active in NC State’s CSLEPS program – the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service. She taught a 10-week leadership course to 12 freshmen on the Social Change Model of Leadership, and received the visionary leadership certificate through the CSLEPS four-year leadership program.

In addition, she served as a Career Ambassador in NC State’s Career Development Center for three years, leading bi-weekly presentations to organizations at NC State, teaching students how to write resumes, create cover letters, practice for interviews. A member of Zeta Tau Alpha, she was elected to the executive board as the Panhellenic Delegate.

Beyond her collegiate activities, Mastro has been an active volunteer with the Literacy Association in Raleigh, N.C. and Greenville, S.C. teaching GED reading and writing courses and tutoring and mentoring a student.

Mastro has maintained a 3.72 grade point average and is a University Scholar. She expects to graduate from NC State in spring 2014. She graduated from Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, N.C., and is the daughter of John Mastro and Susan Richter.
