Recruiter interest in Poole College students is strong this fall

Poole College’s Fall Career and Internship Fair runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 3 at NC State’s McKimmon Center, but recruitment activities have been under way at Poole College since the start of school.

For supply chain students in Poole College’s undergraduate and graduate programs, the career fair actually began Thursday evening at Nelson Hall, when recruiters from 33 companies were on hand to meet with Poole College students and discuss career, internship and co-op opportunities with their companies, said Tracy Freeman, teaching assistant professor of supply chain management in the college’s Department of Business Management.

They were among the scores of companies whose recruiters have come to Poole College this fall to introduce their companies and help students prepare for the college’s two career fairs.

Company registrations for the first of those career fairs, on October 3, exceeded prior years. With 117 companies signing up, the college added a room to accommodate the 122 booths requested, said Brian Newton, director of career development for Poole College’s Office of Undergraduate Programs. The fall 2013 career fair had 90 company booths.

“I would definitely say that recruiting is gaining momentum and has been very strong for us,” Newton said. That has included in multiple opportunities for students to learn about companies and hone their professionalism.

“We had great participation from employers at our Professional Development Expo held on September 5,” Newton said. That event drew more than a dozen companies whose recruiters gave nearly 20 presentations on a range of career development and professionalism topics and then stayed to network with students afterwards.

Since then, recruiters seeking candidates for accounting, financial services, supply chain, technology and other positions have provided mini-sessions in Poole College classrooms and held resume review sessions, helping students prepare for the career fair.

It has been a busy fall for the college’s Jenkins MBA students as well, with mock interviews and mock career fairs led by professionals who provided feedback, as well as information sessions and networking, national conferences and other opportunities to learn about companies and career options. One company provided a workshop on case interviewing, said Bev Porter, director of the Career Management Center for the college’s Jenkins Graduate School.

The Master of Accounting Program also saw record numbers at its annual fall recruiting events. Twenty-two employers attended Meet the Firms in September including all Big Four firms, Second Tier national and top-ranked regional firms. Seven companies participated in the Corporate & Governmental Expo, including Cree, Cisco, BB&T, First Citizens, SPX, Wells Fargo and the Office of the State Auditor.

The recruitment cycle begins in early summer for the Master of Accounting students, who start meeting potential employers through the program’s Tour of Cities, which introduces students to firms in Atlanta, Charlotte, Greensboro and Washington D.C.

Forty-two students in the Global Luxury Management option in the Jenkins Master of Global Innovation Management are in New York City the week of October 5 for their NYC Study Tour. Included are a NYC Career Fair and several networking sessions with recruiters from luxury brand companies interested in building recruiting relationships with the Global Luxury Management program. The one-year dual degree master’s program is offered in jointly with SKEMA Business School in Sophia Antipolis, France.

The college is hosting a Spring Career and Internship Fair at NC State’s McKimmon Center on February 6, and also participates in the Carolina MBA Connection career fair at the start of the year. The date for that 2015 event will be announced later.
