School is Off to a Smashing Start for these Supply Chain Students

First, they smashed them. Then they took them apart. Then they mapped out where all the components of a box full of old mobile phones came from – their manufacturing source.

That’s what a classroom full of undergraduate supply chain students did during one of their initial fall 2011 class sessions taught by Dr. Christian Rossetti, assistant professor in the NC State Poole College of Management’s Department of Business Management.

The goal of the exercise was to provide students a better understanding of the many aspects – and global reach – of a product’s supply chain. The students searched the World Wide Web to match components to their manufacturers.

The undergraduate students left intact some of the used mobile phones, which had been purchased on line for a few dollars by Rossetti. MBA students were tackling the remainder of the phones during their evening class.
