STRATEGIC RISK MANAGEMENT ACROSS THE ENTERPRISE

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a major corporate governance issue and boards continue to struggle to understand their oversight responsibilities with respect to their management teams’ implementation of enterprise-wide risk management capabilities. It was in response to that need that the ERM Initiative was established in Poole College in 2004. Its mission: to provide thought-leadership about enterprise risk management, with a particular emphasis on the role of ERM in strategic planning and corporate governance.

The initiative’s affiliated faculty members have been building on that founding mission for the past eight years, providing a forum for knowledge sharing and discussion about best practices and participating in research that has led to numerous white papers, webinars, informational videos, workshops, and other resources for organizational leadership teams. The ERM Initiative has partnered with the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks, and other groups on these projects.

Web analytics indicate the ERM Initiative’s website has become a go-to resource for those seeking expert information about enterprise risk management. Popularity of its ERM Roundtables led to the program now being offered in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as Atlanta, Georgia.

The faculty’s work with boards of directors and other ERM leaders has led to the creation of an ERM concentration in the Jenkins Master of Accounting (MAC) program. Professors share perspectives that they gain from their corporate involvement with Poole College students in the classroom, providing real-world context to conceptual ideas. MAC students attend the ERM Roundtables, complementing their coursework with exposure to practitioners’ discussion of the issues, and apply what they learn in practicum projects that assist organizations in launching or refining their ERM programs.  Read more about ERM’s research and executive development opportunities on the ERM website. Serving on the ERM leadership team are Mark Beasley, Deloitte Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and ERM Initiative director; Bonnie Hancock, lecturer in accounting and executive director of the initiative; and Bruce Branson, professor of accounting and associate director. All are on the faculty in the college’s Department of Accounting.
