Students Invited to Sustaining Global Health – A Grand Challenges Proposal Competition

Undergraduate and graduate students at NC State University are invited to put their knowledge to work in a campus-wide competition this fall that seeks to provide sustainable, ethical solutions for global health issues.

The competition is being hosted by the Business Ethics Society, a student organization based in the NC State Poole College of Management, and the Global Health Initiative in NC State’s Office of International Affairs.

Each team in this competition will identify a global health issue and develop a proposal to fund a sustainable solution to that problem, including management, economics, ethics, and technological factors. This means the proposed project should be able to continue operations beyond the pilot phase and grow the number of communities it engages, without reliance on donor assistance.

Application materials are now available for this competition. Final entries are due by midnight on Monday, November 12, 2012, and judging and the awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, November 14, 2:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The format for all entries is a PowerPoint presentation readable with Microsoft Office 2007. Entries must be submitted by email to Dr. Greg Young, NC State Poole College of Management.

The competition includes undergraduate and graduation divisions and provides first, second and third places prizes to teams in each division, a follows: first place receives $400; second, $200; third, $150.

The competition organizers encourage teams to include members who can develop and describe compelling, collaborative and innovative pilot project proposals that help communities in challenged countries to solve problems of poverty, illness and malnutrition in sustainable ways. Teams are encouraged to include members who can develop and give presentations that integrate skills from business management, life sciences, and communication technology.
Winning proposal presentations will provide strategic and creative real-world solutions to global health issues. Entries will be scored on creativity and innovation, rationale and justification, delivery of the proposed solution, and clarity and organization.

Details and registration packets are now available on the Poole College’s events website.. Teams are encouraged to register their intent to participate on the Business Ethics Competition Events Page up to and including the deadline for submitting their proposal presentation.
