Sustainability Careers workshops to help students clarify sustainability-oriented career goals

NC State University students and alumni interested in sustainability-oriented careers are invited to participate in a More than Money Careers (MTM) workshop scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at NC State’s Poole College of Management. Separate sessions have been scheduled for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a session for NC State career development staff.
Poole College’s Sustainability Initiative, NC State’s Sustainability Office, and the NC State Net Impact chapter have partnered with MTM to present the workshops and to make this organization’s services available to NC State students, alumni, and career development staff.
“With many career paths and entry points within the sustainability field, it is often difficult for individuals to figure out how to best leverage their skills, knowledge and networks and to narrow in on a focus,” said Tracy Dixon, director of the University Sustainability Office. “If you are interested in a sustainability career but don't know how to get started, this is the workshop for you. Dr. Boutla and her team have formed a process for helping individuals understand where their strengths intersect with the many roles of sustainability and how to take action.”
In each session, Dr. Mrim Boutla, MTM Careers co-founder, will provide information about the MTM Careers online e-learning platform designed to help students and alumni decide which well-paying career is a better fit for their skills and passion, identify jobs and internships before they are available on job boards, and “successfully apply and interview for opportunities that pay well, and fit your passions and the impact you want to have through your career,” said Jessica Thomas, director of the Sustainability Initiative in Poole College.
“This first set of workshops is being offered as we launch the pilot phase of our partnership with MTM Careers,” Thomas said. “Seating this time will be limited, but based on feedback, we expect to offer another set of workshops in the fall with more capacity at each session,” she said.
“We are excited to present this new resource to NC State students and alumni who seek well-paying positions that are aligned with their goals to make a social impact,” Thomas said. The session for NC State advisors will help them understand how to use this resource to guide students in their career planning.
