Wright, Poindexter Retire this Fall

Both were honored by family and friends from the college at receptions last week, as well as during the college’s Dec. 19 commencement ceremony.

Lorraine Wright, associate professor of accounting

Dr. Lorraine Wright joined the faculty of the NC State College of Management right after receiving her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in the fall of 1992. Over the next 17 years, she has touched the lives of thousands of students while teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of managerial accounting and taxation.

Wright continually sought to improve the educational experience of her students both within the classroom and beyond. She incorporated new uses of technology for her classroom instruction and developed active learning and professional development opportunities, including an experimental student enrichment program that involved counseling and tutoring students on weekends.

She was a faculty advisor to students participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and the annual PricewaterhousCoopers XTax student case competition. She also served as faculty advisor for the student chapter of National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). With her assistance NC State NABA students have received numerous awards at the university, local, regional and national levels, as well scholarships and travel support. Her ongoing mentorship beyond graduation has been appreciated by the NABA members. Dr. Wright was recognized for her dedicated service to NABA with the NABA National Education Award in 2000. Dr. Wright retired from her service to the college in December 2009.

J.C. Poindexter, professor of finance and economics

Julius C. (JC) Poindexter joined the faculty of NC State University as an instructor in economics in 1968, when economics and business were taught in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

From the start of his academic career, he balanced a commitment to research that led to publication in the top journals of economics with a commitment to his students. He served as the director of the Master of Science in Management (now the MBA) program in the early 1990s, and was a leader in the formation of the Department of Business Management and later the College of Management. In the course of his academic career, the focus of his teaching shifted from macroeconomics to finance, which he taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In the 1990s, his interests expanded to include issues in law and technology and experimental economics. He also has been professionally active as a valuation expert in litigation cases involving a broad range of issues from damages to anti-trust liability. Professional affiliations include membership in the American Economic Association and National Association of Forensic Economists. On campus, he has served on the NC State Faculty Senate and the university’s Institutional Review Board – Use of Human Subjects in Research.
