Poole Pack Development Series: Unconscious Bias
Nelson Hall 2405
The first session of the Poole Pack Development Series will be led by Tayah Butler and discuss unconscious bias in the workplace. The goal of this session is to illuminate bias that can affect our working relations in order to help mitigate the effects of unconscious bias in our words and actions. Butler and the participants will be utilizing the “comfort zone” method to:
- Understand why implicit attitudes are not a reflection of your personal character
- Learn how to “unlearn” biases
- Learn when your actions become a reflection of how much you value those impacted by your unconscious attitudes
- Be able to recognize when your stress levels reach “panic zone”, which will help you stay open to learning and growing
Tayah Butler is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Poole College of Management. She has been working in diversity and inclusion in higher education for 12 years, primarily to help business schools become more inclusive of historically marginalized groups.
Tayah has helped integrate this session’s content into multiple class sessions for Poole college undergraduate courses in Human Resources and for the Masters in Accounting professional development course, and she also delivers this content to companies who seek training and development for their organizations.
