Julia Donajkowski

Undergraduate School/degree:

Baldwin Wallace University – B.S. Middle Childhood Education, Math Minor ’13

Background – where are you from originally?

I was born in Cincinnati, OH but, I grew up in Erie, PA. I have been living in eastern North Carolina for the past six years and happily call it home!

Past work/leadership experience/activities in college

For the past six years, I have been working as a public middle school math and science teacher in eastern North Carolina. For the last year, I was simultaneously teaching and completing my accounting prerequisites online with Wake Tech. I also worked as a summer camp director in Rocky Mount.

While pursuing my undergraduate, I worked as a biology lab assistant, a math tutor at the “drop-in” lab, and graded homework for a calculus class. I was a member of Circle K International for four years, serving as secretary for a year and vice president for two years. I also participated in intramural volleyball and basketball.

What type of job would you like to have after completing the MAC Program? If you already have secured a job – where and what area?

I am currently trying to decide between tax or advisory as both sectors have appealing qualities. I am hoping to secure employment in the Raleigh, Durham, or Chapel Hill areas.

Do you have any advice or tips you would like to give prospective students looking at applying to MAC programs?

Do not be afraid to go for it! Possessing an undergraduate degree in Education, teaching for six years, and having no real experience in the business realm, I was worried I did not stand a chance to be accepted into such a good program. However, during the application process, I focused on what I could bring to the table – skills that carry over to any work environment, strong academic performance, and where my interests lie. If you are looking at a career change to accounting, the MAC program could be for you so do not hesitate to put yourself out there! Also, make sure you start the process early as there are a lot of components.

Why did you choose the NC State MAC Program?

Since I am undertaking a pretty significant career change, I wanted to ensure I got the best education possible. The combination of the MAC program’s high national ranking, amazing placement rate, focus on experiential learning, and capable faculty made me confident NC State’s MAC program would provide me the tools needed to become a successful CPA.

What are your expectations while attending the MAC Program?

My expectations while attending the MAC program include receiving an outstanding education that will help me be successful on the CPA exam and in my future career. I also expect that the program will challenge me while helping me grow in my understanding and application of accounting.

What are you looking forward to the most while in the Program?

I am looking forward to meeting new people – both my peers and professors and officially starting my journey towards my new career!
