{"id":511035,"date":"2021-02-24T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-24T20:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/?p=511035"},"modified":"2025-05-29T12:30:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T16:30:59","slug":"international-business-dual-degree-program-celebrates-10-years-of-global-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/international-business-dual-degree-program-celebrates-10-years-of-global-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"International Business Dual Degree Program Celebrates 10 Years of Global Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-3863fbcb-71d0-42d3-8750-aeae36f6bdeb\">In August 2011, NC State Poole College of Management formed a partnership with the International Partnership of Business Schools (IPBS) under the leadership of <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/irweiss\">Dr. Ira Weiss<\/a>, professor of strategic management and former dean of&nbsp;Poole College. This allowed for students to earn dual degree agreements with ESB Business School in Reutlingen, Germany, and NEOMA Business School in Reims, France. Thus creating the International Business Dual Degree (IBDD) Program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-ca789761-062c-4576-a963-5f13257830c0\">Ten years and 101 alumni later, the IBDD Program has added additional language tracks and welcomed students from Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Now, the program is working towards a new partnership in China with the Antai College of Economics and Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-40b125df-0c6a-447d-a45d-73df81a080a9\">\u201cI started in my role as Director of Global Programs shortly after the first three students from Germany arrived to NC State. Seeing the growth in the program and observing students start and complete the program has been great to see,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/rlsandru\">Robert Sanduck<\/a>, director of global programs. \u201cIt attracts a special type of student to Poole &#8211; one who is excited to engage in an intense global experience and who upon graduation is ready to launch a globally-minded career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It attracts a special type of student to Poole &#8211; one who is excited to engage in an intense global experience and who upon graduation is ready to launch a globally-minded career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-18dfb966-e52a-46ae-a800-260461a4e1ba\">\u201cNow in our tenth year, I remain in awe of the students who are a part of the IBDD program. They are talented, driven, and passionate about international business and add a unique perspective to our student population and our global dispersed alumni. Students will complete a three-month or six-month internship during each phase of the program as well as take most, if not all, of their courses at the partner school in the host language.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"right-aside wp-block-ncst-aside-widget\">\n    \n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\"><strong>After four years, students have lived, worked, and studied in two counties, have completed two internships, speak two languages and have earned two degrees.<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n  <\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-d30f764d-8778-4a8d-895b-9ba92eb07d45\">Concerning the degrees, students completing the program will earn a Bachelor of Science in business administration from NC State and a Bachelor of Science in international management from their partner school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"is-text wp-block-ncst-accordion\" >\n    <div class=\"accordion isLinked\" id=\"ncst-accordion-ih5wst\">\n          \n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\" name=\"ih5wst\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n                  <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">Chinese Track<\/h2>\n              <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poole\u2019s newest IBDD track partners with Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. The university is known for its vigorous international exchanges and cooperation between students as well as having a leading business school in China. Students will be continuing their Mandarin education with classes taught in Mandarin and English to immerse students in the language and culture.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/undergraduate\/global\/international-business-dual-degree-program-ibdd\/chinese-track\/\">Learn more about the Chinese track.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\" name=\"ih5wst\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n                  <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">Italian Track<\/h2>\n              <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in the Italian track spend their third and fourth years in Piacenza, Italy, studying at the Universit\u00e1 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC), the world\u2019s largest Catholic university. It is one of the few business schools worldwide to have attained triple accreditation from EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global\/ddp\/ibdd\/language-tracks\/french-track\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global\/ddp\/ibdd\/language-tracks\/french-track\/\">Learn more about the French track.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\" name=\"ih5wst\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n                  <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">German Track<\/h2>\n              <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ESB Business School in Reutlingen, Germany, is one of the largest business schools in Germany with high academic standards and a commitment to international learning. During their time at ESB, many students have completed their internships with automobile manufacturer Diamler, Porsche and as well as many other German companies like SAP and Lidl.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global\/ddp\/ibdd\/language-tracks\/german-track\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global\/ddp\/ibdd\/language-tracks\/german-track\/\">Learn more about the German track.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\" name=\"ih5wst\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n                  <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">Spanish Track<\/h2>\n              <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third and fourth-year Spanish track students will reside in Madrid, Spain, while attending the ICADE Business School at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, one of the most prestigious private universities in Spain. The ICADE Business School has a long history of training business professionals by combining the best of the past with innovative teaching, research and transfer of knowledge in the field of business.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global\/ddp\/ibdd\/language-tracks\/spanish-track\/\">Learn more about the Spanish track.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-487ef2ee-98e2-4371-a6ec-22371d521f42\"><strong>Our Students<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-e8db93ed-95c9-4bed-bb84-6aa6ace20819\">This academic year the IBDD Program welcomed 28 new students including 16 students from our partner schools in France and Germany as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/undergraduate\/global\/international-business-dual-degree-program-ibdd\/ibdd-students\/first-year-students\/\">13 first-year students<\/a> who started at NC State in August. She describes her program in Madrid as challenging dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting to how fast Spaniards speak. She was drawn to the IBDD Program by the opportunity to earn two degrees and the reputation of the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-12c661a6-0927-4c56-9a7a-f928c8175ca6\">\u201cI am most looking forward to having the ability to travel over the weekend and see as much of the world as I can while still balancing my studies,\u201d said Halferty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-09ecba11-6e10-4e36-8ba5-5faaf3137395\">Halferty anticipates the program\u2019s rigorous coursework and experience will bring lifelong connections that will be beneficial professionally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-f12ce4b4-ffe6-40bb-aeb6-1889dcff6ff2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2020\/10\/IMG_5207-Katherine-Beekman-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is IMG_5207-Katherine-Beekman-768x1024.jpeg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Katherine Beekman, first-year IBDD student<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-201e69bf-8a6b-4188-ad24-e379e94dc15c\"><strong>Katherine Beekman, Chinese Track<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-1d317256-a371-4640-9c24-f52b124a2c14\">Katherine Beekman is a first-year student and one of the first IBDD students in the new Chinese track offered by the college. The North Carolina native was able to visit cities throughout Europe and build a professional network around the globe. He spent his time abroad at NC State, as he is a French native, enjoying rewarding and insightful courses as well as traveling the East coast with classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-992981a8-da8d-434d-bfb0-ab9bb31f33f8\">Maarek\u2019s best memory from NC State was his last Thanksgiving that he spent with both an American and international classmate from Italy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-726719c1-f619-484d-85dd-1de394b7bd9b\">\u201cHe [classmate] has also brought over his family from Jamaica and New York so the dinner was a true melting pot. Fleming joined the program with the goal in mind of becoming an international businessman and to put himself in line for future success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-5b664804-20d2-401a-b681-d8721afe801b\">\u201cAt the beginning studying in Madrid, there were some cultural differences to become accustomed to. However, overcoming adversity and adapting accordingly to new environments and cultures is how one will succeed in life,\u201d said Fleming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-e7baba99-4ced-4a9f-bc0b-faf7c1a9636c\">Fleming concentrated his studies in finance and business administration while abroad and got the opportunity to travel to Morocco, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and many cities in Spain. This allowed for students to earn dual degree agreements with ESB Business School in Reutlingen, Germany, and NEOMA Business School in Reims, France. Thus creating the International Business Dual Degree (IBDD) Program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"block-ca789761-062c-4576-a963-5f13257830c0\">Ten years and 101 alumni later, the IBDD Program has added additional language tracks and welcomed students from Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Now, the program is working towards a new partnership in China with the Antai College of Economics and Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"block-40b125df-0c6a-447d-a45d-73df81a080a9\">\u201cI started in my role as Director of Global Programs shortly after the first three students from Germany arrived to NC State. She describes her program in Madrid as challenging dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting to how fast Spaniards speak. The North Carolina native was able to visit cities throughout Europe and build a professional network around the globe. He spent his time abroad at NC State, as he is a French native, enjoying rewarding and insightful courses as well as traveling the East coast with classmates.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"block-992981a8-da8d-434d-bfb0-ab9bb31f33f8\">Maarek\u2019s best memory from NC State was his last Thanksgiving that he spent with both an American and international classmate from Italy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"block-726719c1-f619-484d-85dd-1de394b7bd9b\">\u201cHe [classmate] has also brought over his family from Jamaica and New York so the dinner was a true melting pot. Fleming joined the program with the goal in mind of becoming an international businessman and to put himself in line for future success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"block-5b664804-20d2-401a-b681-d8721afe801b\">\u201cAt the beginning studying in Madrid, there were some cultural differences to become accustomed to. However, overcoming adversity and adapting accordingly to new environments and cultures is how one will succeed in life,\u201d said Fleming.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p id=\"block-e7baba99-4ced-4a9f-bc0b-faf7c1a9636c\">Fleming concentrated his studies in finance and business administration while abroad and got the opportunity to travel to Morocco, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and many cities in Spain.
