When her plane landed in Spain, the Poole College business administration student had a lot to navigate: finding an apartment, buying a SIM card to use her cell phone, and applying for residency to stay longer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her education as a student in Poole\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global-programs\/dual-degree-programs\/ibdd\/\">International Business Dual Degree (IBDD)<\/a> program began as soon as she arrived in the Spanish capital for a two-year study-abroad program. Her time there so far has been \u201chands down the best year of my life,\u201d says Haddock, who\u2019s pursuing a minor in Spanish. When Haddock finishes the program, she\u2019ll have a business degree with a finance concentration from NC State and a degree in international business management and administration from Madrid\u2019s Universidad Pontificia Comillas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IBDD program is among the increasing number of study-abroad options for undergraduates and graduate students through <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global-programs\/\">Poole\u2019s Global Programs Office<\/a>, established in 2011. Since then, the office has developed global education opportunities for a year, a semester or a summer with partner schools in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some options don\u2019t require travel, including virtual internships and the Global Seminar Series, which allows students to work on cross-institutional teams with world-class business schools to address actual business challenges for an organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default right-aside\"><blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;Based on where students are developmentally and their background, they\u2019re able to pick where they best fit into our portfolio of programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBased on where students are developmentally and their background, they\u2019re able to pick where they best fit into our portfolio of programs,\u201d Global Programs Director <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/rlsandru\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Sandruck<\/a> says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The portfolio is diversifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global-programs\/study-abroad\/global-corps-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Corps Scholars<\/a> program launched this spring, funded by a donor\u2019s gift to Poole. The pilot program supports students from<strong> <\/strong>underrepresented groups, who may use the grant to support their unique global engagement opportunity. More global opportunities are planned, including an international internship program and new programs to developing nations in Africa, Asia and Latin America.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;Going abroad and interacting with individuals from different countries and cultures provides an impetus for this.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s world, aspects of globalization touch every business, big or small. About 250 students, including non-business students, went abroad through Poole in the 2021-2022 academic year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although COVID-19 is still an issue, \u201cIt\u2019s not a reason not to go anywhere anymore,\u201d Sandruck says. \u201cWe and our host countries have managed to travel effectively with COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About a third of Poole students typically studied abroad before the pandemic, a high rate for NC State and for a business school. \u201cPre-COVID, study abroad was the cultural norm at Poole. We\u2019ve been rebuilding global engagement as a tradition at Poole College,\u201d Sandruck says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investment in the Global Programs Office is the foundation of that Poole tradition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;We know our students and our curriculum, and we know how to match those two together to help students find the global experience they\u2019re seeking.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a strong central team that\u2019s very supportive of students. We know our students and our curriculum, and we know how to match those two together to help students find the global experience they\u2019re seeking,\u201d Sandruck says. \u201cAll of that distinguishes us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global education is more than travel to fun destinations. Poole aims to provide students with a global perspective to help them succeed in an increasingly intercultural workforce. Poole\u2019s programs provide ways for students to experience other cultures, learn about international business and build a worldwide network.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a growing trend that you really can\u2019t be a leading business school without providing an opportunity for students to have global experience\u2026much like DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion),\u201d Sandruck says. \u201cThe two are very interrelated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way Poole increases diversity at the college is with the many international students who bring their perspectives to NC State classes through the marquee IBDD program and other programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For NC State students from North Carolina who haven\u2019t traveled or studied abroad, \u201cThey are still able to receive a global education through the relationships that form between classmates from around the world,\u201d Poole Associate Director of Global Programs <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/ejmilroy\/\">Ellen Frost<\/a> says. \u201cThrough group projects and practicums, students from the U.S. and international students practice intercultural communication and how to navigate different approaches to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-ncst-image-grid\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Jaylen-Johnson-1-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-512629\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Jaylen-Johnson-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Jaylen-Johnson-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Jaylen-Johnson-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Jaylen-Johnson-1.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Jaylen Johnson during his three-week trip in Seville, Spain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Intercultural communication was a driving reason Poole student Jaylen Johnson \u201924 joined a summer study-abroad trip, the most popular global program. The business administration major spent three weeks in May and June in Seville, Spain, on a program Poole professor Tom Byrnes led.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy main goal was to have an immersive experience,\u201d says Johnson, who\u2019s pursuing a Spanish minor. \u201cI wanted to see if I could really communicate where the primary language isn\u2019t English\u2026I did great. There was never any situation where I couldn\u2019t explain myself or ask for help if I needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On his first trip abroad, he befriended some Spanish college students he played basketball and soccer with. And he did some informal English tutoring with them.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know there\u2019s more to the world. You see it on National Geographic shows and YouTube,\u201d Johnson says. \u201cI wanted to put my own eyes on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;I know there\u2019s more to the world. You see it on National Geographic shows and YouTube. I wanted to put my own eyes on it.\u201d<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He had the opportunity to put his eyes on a range of companies in a course on doing business in Spain. After graduating, she plans to work as a financial analyst there before pursuing an MBA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default left-aside\"><blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;The most valuable part of my IBDD experience has been my newfound sense of self.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Before spending their last two years of college outside their home country, IBDD students study for two years at their home institution. At NC State, Haddock enjoyed dorm life, a sorority, football games and campus clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then she was eager to live abroad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most valuable part of my IBDD experience has been my newfound sense of self,\u201d Haddock says. \u201cBefore coming to Spain, I struggled to even cook dinner for myself\u2026Today I am confident in who I am and my abilities. When her plane landed in Spain, the Poole College business administration student had a lot to navigate: finding an apartment, buying a SIM card to use her cell phone, and applying for residency to stay longer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Her education as a student in Poole\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global-programs\/dual-degree-programs\/ibdd\/\">International Business Dual Degree (IBDD)<\/a> program began as soon as she arrived in the Spanish capital for a two-year study-abroad program. Her time there so far has been \u201chands down the best year of my life,\u201d says Haddock, who\u2019s pursuing a minor in Spanish. Choosing to go beyond her comfort zone through travel \u201cI can confidently say is the best decision I have ever made.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/image-grid -->\n<section class=\"wp-block-ncst-image-grid\"><!-- wp:image {\"id\":512628,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Global-programs-Emily-Haddock-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-512628\"\/><figcaption>Emily Haddock is earning dual degrees while living in Madrid, Spain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image --><\/section>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/image-grid -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>She\u2019s gaining more than important life skills \u2014 she\u2019s earning marketable academic credentials. When Haddock finishes the program, she\u2019ll have a business degree with a finance concentration from NC State and a degree in international business management and administration from Madrid\u2019s Universidad Pontificia Comillas.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The IBDD program is among the increasing number of study-abroad options for undergraduates and graduate students through <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/global-programs\/\">Poole\u2019s Global Programs Office<\/a>, established in 2011. The pilot program supports students from<strong> <\/strong>underrepresented groups, who may use the grant to support their unique global engagement opportunity. About 250 students, including non-business students, went abroad through Poole in the 2021-2022 academic year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Although COVID-19 is still an issue, \u201cIt\u2019s not a reason not to go anywhere anymore,\u201d Sandruck says. \u201cWe and our host countries have managed to travel effectively with COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>About a third of Poole students typically studied abroad before the pandemic, a high rate for NC State and for a business school. \u201cPre-COVID, study abroad was the cultural norm at Poole. Poole aims to provide students with a global perspective to help them succeed in an increasingly intercultural workforce. Poole\u2019s programs provide ways for students to experience other cultures, learn about international business and build a worldwide network.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a growing trend that you really can\u2019t be a leading business school without providing an opportunity for students to have global experience\u2026much like DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion),\u201d Sandruck says. \u201cThe two are very interrelated.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>One way Poole increases diversity at the college is with the many international students who bring their perspectives to NC State classes through the marquee IBDD program and other programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For NC State students from North Carolina who haven\u2019t traveled or studied abroad, \u201cThey are still able to receive a global education through the relationships that form between classmates from around the world,\u201d Poole Associate Director of Global Programs <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/ejmilroy\/\">Ellen Frost<\/a> says. \u201cThrough group projects and practicums, students from the U.S. and international students practice intercultural communication and how to navigate different approaches to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/image-grid -->\n<section class=\"wp-block-ncst-image-grid\"><!-- wp:image {\"id\":512629,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/Jaylen-Johnson-1-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-512629\"\/><figcaption>Jaylen Johnson during his three-week trip in Seville, Spain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image --><\/section>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/image-grid -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Intercultural communication was a driving reason Poole student Jaylen Johnson \u201924 joined a summer study-abroad trip, the most popular global program. The business administration major spent three weeks in May and June in Seville, Spain, on a program Poole professor Tom Byrnes led.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cMy main goal was to have an immersive experience,\u201d says Johnson, who\u2019s pursuing a Spanish minor. \u201cI wanted to see if I could really communicate where the primary language isn\u2019t English\u2026I did great. There was never any situation where I couldn\u2019t explain myself or ask for help if I needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>On his first trip abroad, he befriended some Spanish college students he played basketball and soccer with.
