No longer can one expect their baseline knowledge to carry them throughout the course of their careers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it\u2019s why we\u2019re seeing more and more adults return to the classroom \u2013 long after hanging their undergraduate diplomas on the wall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-orange-400-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;The future of the workforce relies on individuals who are able to adapt to new technologies and utilize and incorporate growing fields such as data analytics and artificial intelligence.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe future of the workforce relies on individuals who are able to adapt to new technologies and utilize and incorporate growing fields such as data analytics and artificial intelligence,\u201d explains Frank Buckless, Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. Dean of the Poole College of Management. \u201cWe regularly hear from our industry partners that they rely on us, as a college, to provide training in emerging fields and produce a workforce equipped to tackle the unique challenges facing businesses today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-widget default right-aside\"><div class=\"wp-block-ncst-aside-fact ncst-fact has-orange-400-text-color\"><h2 class=\"fact__heading\">88% of all students plan to pursue a degree or credential after their current educational program.<\/h2><p class=\"fact__support\"><\/p><\/div>\n\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellucian.com\/assets\/en\/white-paper\/credential-clout-survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent survey<\/a> conducted by higher ed tech company Ellucian, 88 percent of all students plan to pursue a degree or credential after their current educational program \u2013 and both recruiters and employees agree that in order to remain relevant in the workplace, employees should take further educational or credentialing programs an average of two years after completing an educational program.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that, Poole College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/erm.ncsu.edu\/library\/article\/what-is-enterprise-risk-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enterprise Risk Management<\/a> 2021 Risk Report identified that the adoption of digital technologies requires new skills or significant efforts to upskill\/reskill existing employees as the <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/thought-leadership\/article\/top-risks-for-2022-challenges-of-retaining-and-attracting-top-talent-will-persist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top risk<\/a> facing businesses through 2031.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Responding to the call<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To meet the demand, Poole College continues to broaden its portfolio of graduate programs, most recently with the fall 2022 launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ra.poole.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Master of Management, Risk and Analytics<\/a> (MRA), which follows its sister program, <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.poole.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Master of Management, Marketing Analytics<\/a> (MMA), which launched in fall 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-ncst-highlight with-image\"><h2 class=\"highlight__label\">Related<\/h2><a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2021\/10\/01\/worth-the-risk-poole-college-to-launch-master-of-management-risk-and-analytics\/\" class=\"highlight__link\" data-ua-cat=\"Highlight Block\" data-ua-action=\"Story Click\" data-ua-label=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2021\/10\/01\/worth-the-risk-poole-college-to-launch-master-of-management-risk-and-analytics\/\"><div class=\"highlight__image-container\"><div class=\"highlight__image-background\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" class=\"highlight__image wp-image-512713\" src=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/RA-PR-FI-16x9-2.jpeg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/RA-PR-FI-16x9-2.jpeg 1500w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/RA-PR-FI-16x9-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/RA-PR-FI-16x9-2-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2022\/09\/RA-PR-FI-16x9-2-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/div><\/div><div class=\"highlight__text-container\"><h3 class=\"highlight__heading\">Worth the Risk: Poole College Launches Master of Management, Risk and Analytics<\/h3><p class=\"highlight__teaser\">With global risks on the rise, the use of data analytics has never been more important. href=\"https:\/\/bai.poole.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Business Analytics and AI Initiative<\/a> and professor of marketing. \u201cWe created the MMA and MRA programs to give students both the fundamental skills they need to conduct data-driven decision-making and in-depth knowledge of the area \u2013 marketing or risk \u2013 that they want to pursue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-orange-400-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;There is a growing need for people who are trained in <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two new programs join NC State\u2019s well-established <a href=\"https:\/\/mba.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jenkins MBA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/group\/mac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jenkins MAC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/gradecon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Economics Graduate<\/a> programs, which often receive high rankings for their affordability and flexibility and make them ideal for working professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The college, in partnership with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/execed.poole.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">NC State Executive Education<\/a>, also recently launched a new <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mac.ncsu.edu\/alumni\/lifelong-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">MAC Lifelong Learning<\/a> program \u2013 giving individuals in the accounting profession the ability to pursue professional development opportunities, network and fulfill industry-required CPE hours \u2013 without the rigor of a full Learning program is twofold. One is to provide an opportunity for alumni and their friends to invest in themselves by keeping up to date with current industry trends and skills. Second, to provide an opportunity to enhance the relationships that originated in the MAC program,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/dsshowal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scott Showalter<\/a>, director of the Jenkins MAC program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuals also have the opportunity to differentiate themselves in the workplace by adding a graduate certificate to their resume. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/programs\/graduate-certificates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Graduate certificates<\/a> are a selective mix of courses designed to give students a deep insight into a specific field, be it operations and supply chain management, technology entrepreneurship and commercialization or marketing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-orange-400-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;We know our students professionally and personally. We don\u2019t leave any student behind \u2013 and we have very high success rates because of that.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom a student standpoint, they of course appreciate the flexibility of our graduate programs. But we often hear that our students also value that our programs, while rigorous, still come with a lot of personal attention,\u201d says Bev Porter, Poole College Director of Career Center for Jenkins Graduate Programs. \u201cIf you have a challenging academic program, you want to have lots of touchpoints with faculty and staff. And we do. We know our students professionally and personally. We don\u2019t leave any student behind \u2013 and we have very high success rates because of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Hunt for the Perfect Program<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As more individuals are looking to sharpen their business skills and stand out in the workforce, finding the perfect program can be a challenge. Those looking for graduate programs often want flexibility, customization and the ability to hone in on specific skills. And while traditional programs like MBAs and MACs still receive a lot of interest, some students are looking for something a little different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Matt McCann, for instance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGoing to graduate school was already a yes in my mind, but I wanted to find a program that lined up with what I wanted and needed. Every month, I scanned websites and researched different programs. Finally, in the fall of 2021, I saw Poole\u2019s marketing analytics program \u2013&nbsp;and it was immediately clear that this program was the right choice,\u201d McCann recently <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.poole.ncsu.edu\/blog\/2022\/03\/21\/marketing-analytics-grad-student-forges-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared<\/a> about his journey to joining the college\u2019s Master of Management, Marketing Analytics program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a faculty member who leads the MMA program, Rand hears similar sentiments from lots of prospective students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-orange-400-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;The desire to receive a concentrated graduate degree in a highly in-demand field such as analytics is a huge selling point, especially since they can do it part-time while continuing to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe desire to receive a concentrated graduate degree in a highly in-demand field such as analytics is a huge selling point, especially since they can do it part-time while continuing to work,\u201d Rand says. \u201cWe also work really hard to ensure all our graduate programs provide several opportunities for our students to Think and Do, which is a hallmark of education at NC State.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graduate students at Poole College get to participate in practicums, networking events, competitions and other high-impact practices that allow them to apply their knowledge in the real world. Students also have the opportunity to engage in the various <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/industry\/initiatives\/\">centers and initiatives<\/a> Poole offers to make the most of their graduate education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur goal is to graduate well-rounded, engaged and competent leaders \u2013 both at the undergraduate and graduate level,\u201d Buckless says. \u201cBy allowing our students to participate in the college\u2019s offerings, whether it\u2019s participating in a Business Analytics Roundtable, taking advantage of our robust career services, or attending one of our DEI events, our desire is for their time at Poole College to enrich their lives both personally and professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eyes on the Future<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to ensure the college continues to offer valuable programs and professional development opportunities to meet the ever-evolving needs of the business community, college leadership regularly engages with its industry partners to make sure Poole College graduates have the skills and resources they need to be successful in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe make ongoing, continuous changes to our programs \u2013 modifying existing curriculum or introducing and phasing out courses to ensure our learning processes are benefiting our students the way they are supposed to,\u201d says Vikas Anand, associate dean for academic programs at Poole College. \u201cEvery few years, we thoroughly review our portfolio of graduate offerings and examine whether needs have emerged that can\u2019t be met by our existing degree or certificate offerings.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-orange-400-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;Every few years, we thoroughly review our portfolio of graduate offerings and examine whether needs have emerged that can\u2019t be met by our existing degree or certificate offerings.\u201d<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And since the workforce is regularly evolving, you can be sure that Poole College will be, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing broader environmental trends happening that have changed skill requirements, so we\u2019re responding to those with new programs &#8211; like the marketing analytics and risk analytics programs,\u201d Anand continues. \u201cWe\u2019re also working to develop graduate certificates in sustainability and innovation and corporate entrepreneurship. We know our students, their needs and their aspirations. We offer lifelong career support and career coaching for all of our students. For our working professional students, we recognize career coaching can\u2019t happen during traditional work hours because they are working. So we meet them where they are &#8211; whether that\u2019s evenings or weekends. We also hold events and programs, like bootcamps to master career-related skills, on weekends. For our full-time students, we know each of them by name and love that they know they can pop into our offices at any time. Also, we are very proud to offer five mentorship programs for our MBA students with major companies like Biogen and IBM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-collapsible-more ncst-collapsible-more\"><div class=\"collapsible-more__collapsed-content-container collapse panel-collapse \" id=\"collapsible-more-0\" aria-labelledby=\"collapsible-more-heading-0\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What makes our Poole College graduate school students attractive to potential employers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our graduates make an immediate impact in the workplace, which I credit to the Think and Do model of applied learning that NC State is known for. But even beyond that, our students are kind. They are brilliant but not pretentious. I like to say any of our graduates would pass the airport test \u2013&nbsp;meaning, if you\u2019re stuck beside them in an airport, you\u2019re going to enjoy talking with them. They fit into the culture of any organization. We hear it all the time. When our graduate students are doing summer internships, we often hear from their employers that they don\u2019t want to let them go come August. Many often request to extend their time with our students by offering them project work after the internship program ends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What piece of advice would you give a student just starting their graduate program?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember that your goal is to focus proactively on your career. The same level of investment you\u2019d put into a course, you need to put into your career aspirations. Don\u2019t leave opportunities on the table. Networking can be daunting, but it\u2019s a competitive market \u2013 and employers want to see you have grit and hunger. Getting all As is wonderful &#8211; but at what cost? We don\u2019t leave any student behind \u2013 and we have very high success rates because of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>The Hunt for the Perfect Program<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As more individuals are looking to sharpen their business skills and stand out in the workforce, finding the perfect program can be a challenge. Those looking for graduate programs often want flexibility, customization and the ability to hone in on specific skills. And while traditional programs like MBAs and MACs still receive a lot of interest, some students are looking for something a little different.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Like Matt McCann, for instance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cGoing to graduate school was already a yes in my mind, but I wanted to find a program that lined up with what I wanted and needed. Every month, I scanned websites and researched different programs. We know our students, their needs and their aspirations. We offer lifelong career support and career coaching for all of our students. For our working professional students, we recognize career coaching can\u2019t happen during traditional work hours because they are working. So we meet them where they are - whether that\u2019s evenings or weekends. We also hold events and programs, like bootcamps to master career-related skills, on weekends. For our full-time students, we know each of them by name and love that they know they can pop into our offices at any time. But even beyond that, our students are kind. They are brilliant but not pretentious. I like to say any of our graduates would pass the airport test \u2013&nbsp;meaning, if you\u2019re stuck beside them in an airport, you\u2019re going to enjoy talking with them. They fit into the culture of any organization. We hear it all the time. When our graduate students are doing summer internships, we often hear from their employers that they don\u2019t want to let them go come August. Many often request to extend their time with our students by offering them project work after the internship program ends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>What piece of advice would you give a student just starting their graduate program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Remember that your goal is to focus proactively on your career. The same level of investment you\u2019d put into a course, you need to put into your career aspirations. Don\u2019t leave opportunities on the table. Networking can be daunting, but it\u2019s a competitive market \u2013 and employers want to see you have grit and hunger. Getting all As is wonderful - but at what cost?
