{"id":513531,"date":"2023-03-07T13:24:38","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T18:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/?p=513531"},"modified":"2023-03-13T09:19:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-13T13:19:40","slug":"high-impact-high-return-the-mba-residency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/high-impact-high-return-the-mba-residency\/","title":{"rendered":"High Impact, High Return: the MBA Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each fall and spring, nearly 100 students from the professional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mba.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jenkins MBA&nbsp;<\/a>program convene in Raleigh for a three-day&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mba.ncsu.edu\/academics\/mba-residency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MBA Raleigh Residency<\/a>&nbsp;to learn, reflect and network. And for MBA candidates like Zach Terry, it\u2019s one of the highlights of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAside from some of my colleagues from Lenovo who had spoken quite highly of the program while I was in my discovery phase of pursuing an MBA, I had not formally met anyone from the Jenkins MBA program in person before the event,\u201d Terry says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo while I was looking forward to the curriculum we would cover, more than anything I was looking forward to meeting the people behind the program, learning who they were, understanding their personalities, and validating that I had made the right decision to join the Jenkins MBA Program. The caliber of both the professors and staff, as well as the other candidates attending the session, were top notch. It made me feel like I was part of a family and further validated my decision to pursue this program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-ncst-image-grid\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2023\/03\/MAH4939-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-513543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2023\/03\/MAH4939-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2023\/03\/MAH4939-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2023\/03\/MAH4939-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/425\/2023\/03\/MAH4939.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>MBA students networking during Raleigh Residency<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poole College leaders launched the first MBA Raleigh Residency program in the fall of 2015 to meet the needs of students like Terry \u2013 and have spent considerable time and effort to ensure it is a signature experience for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur MBA Residency is a requirement for all our online MBA students, so we want to make sure that they walk away from those three days feeling thankful for the experience,\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mba.ncsu.edu\/people\/nkmille3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nichole Miller<\/a>, assistant dean of the Jenkins Graduate Programs.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;Our goal in the residency program is to provide an immediate return on investment for our students in their personal and professional lives. This time allows them to reflect on their leadership styles and learn how to build teams of people that complement each other and lead teams that maximize each individual\u2019s contribution.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raleigh Residency is a two-part crash course in leadership development. In Raleigh Residency I, designed for students to take during their first semester of the MBA program, students engage in exercises and activities to learn about their strengths, review emotional intelligence and reflect on their presentation and communication style.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also have our career development and advising team on hand to help students understand the resources available to them not only while they are students, but also as alumni,\u201d Miller says. \u201cWe provide lifelong career support with 24\/7, one-on-one coaching available. This time allows them to reflect on their leadership styles and learn how to build teams of people that complement each other and lead teams that maximize each individual\u2019s contribution,\u201d Miller says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reema Bhattacharya, who is on track to graduate from the program this spring, completed her Residency I pre-pandemic and waited for the opportunity to do Residency II in person.&nbsp; She enjoyed how each day covered a focused leadership topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/rcmayer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Roger Mayer<\/a>\u2019s trust workshop is relevant for everyone \u2013 no matter what they do. The managing team workshop with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/bmritte2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beth Ritter<\/a>&nbsp;was fun, engaging and introspective. And the global teams workshop with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/blkirkma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Bradley Kirkman<\/a>&nbsp;will be very helpful when working with a wide, geographically dispersed workforce,\u201d Bhattacharya says.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">&#8220;For me, all three days were very impactful. I didn\u2019t simply learn new content, but gripping content that was thought-provoking, motivating and inspirational \u2013\u00a0all of which I can put to use immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with all that learning comes opportunities for fun, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur Raleigh Residency I concludes with a simulation on change management \u2013 which is always exciting to watch. Many of them take personal vacation days to complete the MBA Residency sessions. This time allows them to reflect on their leadership styles and learn how to build teams of people that complement each other and lead teams that maximize each individual\u2019s contribution.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Raleigh Residency is a two-part crash course in leadership development. In Raleigh Residency I, designed for students to take during their first semester of the MBA program, students engage in exercises and activities to learn about their strengths, review emotional intelligence and reflect on their presentation and communication style.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cWe also have our career development and advising team on hand to help students understand the resources available to them not only while they are students, but also as alumni,\u201d Miller says. \u201cWe provide lifelong career support with 24\/7, one-on-one coaching available. The managing team workshop with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/bmritte2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beth Ritter<\/a>&nbsp;was fun, engaging and introspective. And the global teams workshop with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/blkirkma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Bradley Kirkman<\/a>&nbsp;will be very helpful when working with a wide, geographically dispersed workforce,\u201d Bhattacharya says.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/pullquote {\"value\":\"\\u0022For me, all three days were very impactful. I didn\u2019t simply learn new content, but gripping content that was thought-provoking, motivating and inspirational \u2013\u00a0all of which I can put to use immediately.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>But with all that learning comes opportunities for fun, as well.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cOur Raleigh Residency I concludes with a simulation on change management \u2013 which is always exciting to watch.
